Reviews of River Jack Outdoor Trading Company
"I love shopping here. Worth the drive. Great selection and knowledgeable staff. Definitely check out the shoes!"
"Have no idea what store the prior folks were at, the staff, management and owners are nothing but lovely and helpful. The store is amazingly well stocked for it's size, with a huge variety in each section. Prices are standard for their business and the staff is well trained and on point with their advice."
"It was a sunny winter day. A chill breeze swept through the bustling downtown Southern Pines as patrons made their way to frequent their favorite shops. Saturday brought travelers from adjacent towns to the quaint city center in search of respite from their busy lives. Proprietors of the small businesses welcomed them with hospitality with the hopes of selling their wares and perhaps, gaining a lifetime customer. It was on this day I found myself entering River Jacks where my hopes of a peaceful day of shopping and conversation were dashed, taking a turn for the worst. I was caught off guard, as I had frequented this establishment in the past with little concern for safety, however today was different. When I entered there was a creature I hadn’t encountered before. A ghastly shell of a man seething with impotente rage emerged from the cavernous depths of the cluttered establishment. The rabid beast, old and disfigured, unleashed his pent up anger on unsuspecting customers lashing out at the smallest infraction with wonton abandon proclaiming from the top of his lungs “I am the owner and you can get out!”. I paused assessing the situation, around me customers fled, children cried and clung to their mothers. This angered the beast even further, his primitive brain could not comprehend and he lashed out in his confusion accusing the terrified shoppers of stealing. He roamed the store, foaming at the mouth, never shifting his gaze from the shoppers who were too shocked to leave, full of conviction that these lowly peasants were all shoplifting and that he was the apex predator of the outdoor industry. I observed the poor creatures behavior in disgust. I replaced the items I intended to buy and resolved to never shop there again lest I face the owner in all his terrifying misery. After reflecting I came to the realization that the only reason this store exists is because people in the area don’t want to drive to Raleigh. They surely don’t shop there for the prices or hospitality. Jokes aside the owner is a violent dangerous person who if he wants to stay in business shouldn’t step foot in his store unless he wants to scare everyone away. He hates the military, kids and drinks of any kind. Avoid at all costs."
"Store owner and staff were horribly rude and had no patience. They act as if it was my privilege to even be in their store. One star is much. Will never shop here again."
"There were so many things I wanted as I stepped into River Jack that I got a little panicky. I mean I didn’t know where to look, it was like the proverbial rabbit hole, except in every direction and we simply didn’t have enough time. You can feel it as you step over the threshold, the sense of adventure, all of the south in your face as you are out of the old and and into the new! The lure of the open road! Mountain trails! Crystal lakes! River Jack is siren call of a thousand adventures, I felt like I should wear blinders or I would never get out! Afraid if I turned down the wrong aisle, way would lead on to way and I should never get out. If you have someone in your life who has everything and you don’t know what to get them for Christmas or their birthday and you want to thrill them with a gift while cursing them with indecision give them a gift certificate to River Jack. On the one hand, they’ll be as happy as tick on a fat dog, on the other hand as full of angst as chipmunk in a cracker factory. The place is so full of so much fun, interesting, exciting, stuff that by the time I left, I was nearly ready to hit the Appalachian Trail… and I’m 68. It is a wonderland of adventure and self reliance, of gliding along quiet mirror lakes as morning mists rise like dreams, of hiking down rain drenched trails in search of that fabled lost cabin. And it’s all packed into this one little store with employees who have been there for years and know their stuff and can talk shop and help guide you through the myriad of choices. Probably help keep you from getting killed too. If I had the time I’d spend weeks exploring the place. 10 out of 10!"
