About Us
Union Special is a bakery, cafe, food store located at 401 Fayetteville Street in Raleigh, North Carolina. We also have a map marker at 2409 Crabtree Blvd Suite 102. Our bakery produces a variety of sweet and savory pastries, bread, cookies, and vegan fare for both retail and wholesale. We exclusively source our flours from Lindley Mills in Graham, NC, which allows us to create bread and pastries that are indicative of Eastern North Carolina. Our sourdough bread is made using a single, whole wheat natural sponge for strong fermentation and subtle flavor development. Our pastry program uses high-quality ingredients like whole spelt and butter to deliver delicious flavors. Our cafe menu offers a rotating selection of grain and vegetable-forward sandwiches and salads, along with breakfast, lunch, and brunch dishes made from scratch. We also offer vegan options and source ingredients from local small businesses. Customers rave about our delicious food, with highlights including the Hot Turkey Sandwich, BLT, and Union Egg Sandwich. Visit Union Special for a truly special dining experience that will satisfy your taste buds and hunger.

"Upon visiting, I expected the aroma of freshly baked bread to fill the air, but the stagnant nothingness is what was received. Union Special was underwhelming, and if I'm going to spend $4. on one croissant, it better be the best dam croissant I ever had. Needless to say, I've gotten better at Lild. I was beyond disappointed with this downtown Raleigh experience."
"Union special uses great ingredients to make great sandwiches with the passion and curiosity of people who truly love food. These folks take risks and they mostly pay off. Do go for: a good to excellent sandwich, a loaf of bread, a latte. Consider avoiding the house made sausage and hash browns. This location started serving up a spicy chicken sandwich that is reminiscent of your favorite Wendy’s spicy chicken but elevated in every way. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next."
"Their breakfast sandwich is GOOD!!! Especially with the hash brown inside, wow, make it so yummmm. I also got an ice coffee from them and it was really good!"
"Excellent. Had the Union egg sandwich with bacon and picked up a loaf of sourdough for the road. Sandwich was very good and the sourdough was fantastic, dare I say better than La Farm? Can’t stop thinking about that bread, will be back for another loaf very soon."
"So good. Spacious ☑️ Best breakfast sandwich in the entire Triangle ☑️ (yes, that's true) Vegan friendly ☑️ Coffee ☑️ Cool and Vibey ☑️ Lunch and Breakfast and Snack/dessert options ☑️ Very happy about Union Special in Downtown Raleigh. Evey time I eat here I'm surprised at how good it is. The vegan molasses cookie is amazing. The breakfast sandwich is legitimately the best around, honestly, you won't find a better sandwich. This place will be easy for me to be obsessed with."
