Reviews of John Dewey High School
"This school is really dope. I'm a junior about to be a senior next year. When you find something you like, like drama as I an active member of, you will really grow to love this school and the teachers and the people. Yes we have issues but what school doesn't. This school is awesome. You just gotta find what makes this school awesome for you."
"Ive recently transferred there from Abraham Lincoln high school and the differences are amazing. Students and staff are very friendly and it's not hard to make friends. The teachers communicate with the students very well , no matter what the situation is , from learning to personal issues. The overall experience at this school is just amazing."
"I cannot stress enough to people how important it is not to be swayed by uninformed opinions from people who are quick to jump to conclusions but haven't slightest a clue. Dewey's reputation is divided: some believe it is an amazing school, while others believe it isn't. The negative side stems from the closure of Lafayette High School (located a few blocks away) way back in 2006. When Lafayette closed, all of their students were forcefully sent to Dewey by default due to proximity. Even the New York Times reported on how the Department of Education was neglecting Dewey by doing this. The influx of Lafayette students were academically deficient and disorderly compared to Dewey students. The school became overcrowded and violent disruptions soared. Dewey had no say in this. How can you blame a school for something it wasn't responsible for? I would like for everyone and anyone that currently has a negative perspective/opinion on Dewey to reflect and look at what the school has been through, and yet, despite all of that, it manages to succeed in many ways. The students are diverse, analytical and talented. The teachers are hardworking, experienced and dedicated. Do not be swayed by opinions from people who are clueless. Dewey is a great school with great facilities. Lafayette no longer exists, and the environment that used to exist has been flushed away. Visit the school for yourself to see this in action. In New York City, such few large public high schools exist. Don't let this gem slide by you because of an uninformed opinion. Be objective. Be smart."
"I go to this school. I am im the 10th grade going to the 11th. Dewey is a good school! It is not a bad school at alll!! This school is in a good neighborhood and the students are not bad!! Their are are mostly chinese, black, and indian kids that go here. The teachers are very carring and professonal."
"This school undoubtedly has some of the best teachers in NYC. Albeit, while the students may not be the best, the teachers are. There's a very talented teacher body in this school from every corner of the world to create and maintain and interesting mix with a wide array of courses that they all offer. One of the blessings of going to John Dewey is the teachers. Nearly all of them are experienced and have worked in Dewey for decades. The teachers run the gamut, and I find myself always saying, "Oh my God, you should be teaching at Harvard, not here!" because that's how great the teachers are here. It is a rarity to say that about public schools nowadays, especially in NYC. I will always remember Dewey as the high school blessed with the best teachers."
