Reviews of The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center
"As a woman who has chosen not to have a mammogram after extensive research, I am very disappointed to share that I was turned away from the center. Simply read the Cochrane review which recommends against mammography. They refused to perform an ultrasound breast screening, which is a non-invasive screening tool. It is my choice how I choose to screen myself for breast cancer and I should not be discriminated against for choosing not to have a mammogram. Radiation from routine mammograms in my opinion poses a significant cumulative risk of initiating and promoting breast cancer. This is an extremely worrisome statistic for premenopausal women whose breasts are more sensitive to radiation. While I do believe in preventative screenings I have decided to have preventative breast thermogram imaging in lieu of a mammogram and as a secondary screening tool to complement my thermogram, my physician prescribed a breast ultrasound. Unfortunately, I was turned away by this facility as they demanded I undergo a mammogram first without any reason other than one can't be done without the other, which is false. Breast thermography is FDA approved and it detects the physiological changes in the breast tissue that correlate with cancerous or pre-cancerous states. Cancers, even in their earliest stages, need nutrients to maintain or accelerate their growth. To provide nutrients and oxygen to a growing abnormality, blood vessels are caused to remain open, inactive blood vessels are activated and new ones are formed, in a process called neoangiogenesis. This vascular process causes the surface temperature to increase in the affected regions, which is seen using infrared imaging cameras. Additionally, the newly formed or activated blood vessels have a distinct appearance that thermography can detect. Thermography is a physiological test. Therefore, it cannot identify tumors, but it does provide the clinician with extremely useful information regarding areas of abnormality which can be examined clinically and with anatomic tests such as an ultrasound. Since thermal imaging detects changes at the cellular level, studies suggest that thermograms can detect activity, such as neoangiogenesis, eight to ten years BEFORE any other test. Thermography affords the unique opportunity to view the physiological changes that occur BEFORE the actual formation of the tumor. Thermography is an excellent screening tool and if this place truly cared about helping women, they would never turn away a patient who is looking for a simple study to be performed to evaluate anatomy. Having a mammogram should not change the results of an ultrasound. It is a stand-alone test. It is a patient’s right to refuse treatments and to be turned away from receiving a simple test that was prescribed by a physician is discrimination. Mammograms are medical treatments with potential side effects and women who choose otherwise should not be discriminated against for choosing an alternative option to maintain their health. I urge this organization to reconsider its approach to women’s health and realize that there are many women out there like me who do not want mammograms but still want to screen their breasts. Thankfully, I was able to find a radiologist who gladly performed the ultrasound and my results were normal and definitive without any mammogram."
"I come here for all my screenings and ultrasounds. This year had to get a biopsy. Dr. Morgan and staff, the two Kimberly's were so patient and caring. It was a very scary procedure but was walked through every step and they made sure I was comfortable and calm. Thank you for making me feel at ease."
"What a terrible experience for my wife! The center absolutely refused to give her the testing she needed without prior films, which were nearly impossible to get without a herculean effort as we had moved from out of the area. Communication was poor, and very insensitive to someone going through what can be a very emotionally draining experience. As a physician and family member of a patient, I would not recommend using this site in the future."
"Excellent center for stereotactic biopsy. Very competent and organized staff from the moment of registration to completion. I've never seen any facility handle patients so efficiently and paying attention to all their questions and needs. I'm planning to have all my screenings done here in the future."
