Reviews of South Beach Psychiatric Center
"They are so wonderful here and I truly feel that treatment was so therapeutic. They have wonderful groups and DBT and make sure your needs are met and accounted for. They were super flexible to grant me time to celebrate my mom's birthday! Shout out to all especially to Melissa, Rena, and Romesa for their help. Dr. Darly along with Dr. Mehta and Dr Preethi were so amazing. Charge nurse Gitu is amazing and make sure we take our meds to get well. Shout out to Allison, Alyssa, Cris and the most amzazing Mojadas. We can't forget the maintenance crew, along with kitchen staff and mojadas. They deserve a raise. Special shout out to Pete and Albert who went above and beyond to sympathize with us all. Thank you and love you! Mei H. from 4B :)"
"NYS needs to learn from WillowBrook and its history how to improve , not duplicate! Haven't we learned yet? Punishment without compassion or nurture will never improve the lives of people needing mental healing. It is counterproductive and South Beach Psychiatric Center is a waste of taxpayers dollars! It is shameful that after many complaints , documentaries showing extreme abuse to the mentally ill NYS still did nothing! South Beach Psychiatric facility should be shut down!! Enough is enough!!"
"Not much has changed in 40 years, since the documentary children of darkness came out. This place has been testing on patients that they deem inhuman and they treat them as such. There might be a few employees that care, but it falls on deaf ears, to the ones in charge, like always. May all those patients that were killed by neglect or because they were knowingly given fatal doses of medications. May they rest in peace."
"I was here for 8 months (4 months inpatient, 4 months transitional Living residence,) and the units are well kept, the majority of the staff are friendly and love to help (you're always going to have a straggler or 2,) and the food wasn't half bad. I, like anyone else, wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but once I accepted that they were actually trying to help me, and I stopped being cynical, my experience was much easier. I recommend this place for sure! 5 stars!"
"It’s unfortunate to have a family member with a mental illness. You want your loved one to get help and live a normal life with the help of medication. What’s difficult is to not know what goes on inside the hospital. I am familiar with South Beach from years ago. It was old and dingy. The staff for the most part was very pleasant. Unfortunately my brother after years of being on his own, is now back in the hospital. Setting up a visit is time consuming. I couldn’t get Jennifer the women in charge of visitation to answer or return a call. I finally was able to setup a drop off, not a visit. Before the drop off of clothes and hygiene products, I inquired about bringing something to eat. I was told I could drop food but anything not finished could not be saved. Understandable, that was the same rule from years ago. My husband dropped the belongs and McDonalds at 11:30am. Jennifer won’t let my brother have his food till 3pm. How miserable is she that she has to deprive someone from eating a hot meal, just because she can. What time is lunch????? To visit a patient you have to be unemployed. Tues and Thursday 1 to 3pm only. Now, I have to pay closer attention to what goes on there. I felt comfortable in the past but, apparently they have a person in charge that goes out of her way to upset the patients. To fully understand why this is so alarming is because the patients have no freedom. They have to ask for permission to use the restroom, they can’t sleep if their tired- only at bedtime. It’s very sad, and I’m fully aware that guidelines and procedures have to be used to give structure and stability. That doesn’t mean you have to be heartless. A visit or a drop off is the way we view Christmas. So what Jennifer did was show a child a gift , and then tell him he can’t have it. This is a health care professional? not in my opinion."
