Reviews of Hamilton Benita
"I had a bad experience with this Physician's Assistant (whose name is Benita Hamilton, not Hamilton Benita) when she treated me at Orange Urgent Care in Middletown in the summer of 2020, and I ended up going to the hospital unnecessarily on her advice because she missed what should have been an obvious diagnosis. I'd been suffering from 103/104 fever for an entire week and had already gotten a negative Covid test from a different facility a few days earlier. Although I requested a second test at Orange Urgent Care to be sure it wasn't Covid, I also asked to be checked out for a tick-borne infection on the advice of a doctor friend of mine. I'd been bitten by a deer tick about a week before the fever started, which I related to Ms. Hamilton. I even showed her the mark from the bite. After doing a blood analysis, she came back and told me that my platelet count was dangerously low, and urged me to go directly to the ER for fear that I could bleed to death from a simple cut or bruise. I was reluctant to do so for various reasons, and asked her if she knew whether low platelet count was associated with Covid, or anything else she was aware of. She said no. I decided to go home and be careful not to cut myself. The next day, my fever spiked to 105, and my wife insisted I go to the hospital, which I did. At the ER, while they did not entirely rule out Covid, they strongly suspected that I was suffering from a tick-borne infection, and immediately put me on Doxycycline, the standard antibiotic for such infections. I was held overnight, and by the next morning the fever was completely gone, and I was feeling 1000% better, including getting my appetite back, which had been very diminished for the whole week. They kept me over a second night to be sure I remained stable, continuing the IV antibiotic, but the infection had effectively been knocked out (I did have to continue the meds orally at home.) Turns out I'd had something called Anaplasmosis. It's an infection similar to Lyme, that is also carried by deer ticks. It's not as well known, but still quite common in this region. Like Lyme, it doesn't show up in a blood test right away, so initial treatment is based on reasonable suspicion. The key thing is that it's easily treatable with antibiotics, so that there was absolutely no need for me to go to the hospital. If Ms. Hamilton had known her stuff, she could have given me a prescription, and that would've been the end of it. But despite having more than enough evidence to suspect Anaplasmosis, she missed the diagnosis. (Interestingly, I later learned through my own research that low platelet count, as well as sustained high fever, are both indicators for Anaplamosis!) I will add that I also find fault with Orange Urgent Care. They are part of a group of urgent care centers which, at the time I went there, had only one actual physician, Dr. Brendan O'Connor, supervising all the physician's assistants, over multiple locations. For the most part, the PA's are left to operate autonomously. The day I went there, Dr. O'Connor was at one of the other locations. After I got home from the hospital, although I got the runaround for several days, I eventually spoke to him. He admitted to me that if he had been there that day, and Ms. Hamilton had consulted with him, he likely would have suspected the tick-borne infection and prescribed the antibiotic. Draw your own conclusion. Very fortunately for me, the entire hospital visit was covered by my insurance. Otherwise, it could have cost me thousands! And one last thing. Ms. Hamilton has a Linked-in page with the following statement on it: "As a Christian I apply the principle of God's Super plus my Natural = Supernatural results!" Pretty weird, and not the kind of thinking I want in my health care providers. Note: This review was originally posted on the listing for Benita Hamilton, P.A. After a couple of months, the listing "mysteriously" changed to Hamilton Benita, Doctor, and my review had disappeared. Fortunately, I had saved it, and have now re-posted it to the new listing."
