Reviews of Stagg Street Center for Children
"Best kept secret in the neighborhood! My nephews started Stagg Center's 2s program this week. I should start by explaining that I am an informed and involved Tia/Aunt. When my sister said she had the boys on the list to start daycare I went into high anxiety. As former director of education at children's art museum and now work a national parent educator at a literacy organization- I think you know where I'm going with this...I'm obsessed with early childhood and my nephews... potentially an opinionated pain in the ***. I have a bunch of feelings about what should be happening with the cognitive, social-emotional and physical well-being of all children but especially my babies. All of this is important because the center does wonderful + important work, but their website and social media is outdated. Online presence was the first thing I noticed when stalking this program. My sister learned about the center from a mommy FB group and was encouraged by another parent. We walked in without a scheduled site visit and I was surprised to see how well this modest program met my needs (I said it... "my needs"). Staff is warm and caring, the place is spotless, and the program is very affordable. I posted pictures with notes for you, Yelpers with big feelings too. 0-5 is the most important time in human development - what is learned alongside of nurturing and caring adults determines outcomes. This program is literacy rich, and supports self-regulation of emotions and a move towards independence for 2-3s. The best evidence is what we observed in week 1: the boys transitioned beautifully, not once have they said they don't want to go to "school" infact they say they like it, they eat well, exhausted when they get home, happy in the morning. We attended a parent meeting yesterday (the Friday before Labor Day) and very nice happy parents showed up. The demographics of the children are diverse in income and representation - what you want when raising good New Yorkers and people. They take vouchers if you have them and tuition for paying parents is modest, healthy meals are included (see the menu I posted). Staff is bilingual, 2s get Spanish enrichment in a creative curriculum (see the lesson and schedule I posted), menu is amazing, clean and safe age appropriate environment, art/math/science thinking supported, class fish + living plants, dedicated learning spaces for pretend play, reading, writing, building, making art and exploring. They are a DOE PreK4All site so its free for 4s. There are currently 12 FREE seats available in PreK! The bilingual front desk will help parents with applications for vouchers. Stagg Ctr has been around since 1966, we met a mom who went there as a child. We will post a review in a few months to let you know how it goes - meanwhile I wanted to get the secret out and get pictures into the YELP universe."
"Stagg Street Center is a great Pre-School in East Williamsburg. Our kids are very happy there!"
"My son Luca has been attending the Stagg Street Center for Children since January 2018 now and absolutely LOVES his school. The program is very well structured and gives the children lots of opportunities to learn and play. They open at 8am, start with breakfast at 8:30am and then go on to circle time where the children learn and get to move/dance at 9am. From 9:30am to 11:30am is play/learn program with parts happening either in the gym or on the roof (huge outdoor playground). At 11:30am, the school serves a delicious and nutritious lunch, after which the children go to sleep from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. In the afternoon there is some more arts/music/writing/reading instruction plus free play and some more time for movement in the gym or on the roof. The children get another snack in the afternoon as well, so three meals in total throughout the day. We pick our son up late (6pm) and he always wants to stay and continue playing when my husband and I get there. My son learns so much, we are truly impressed. This year, his class learned how caterpillars become butterflies in a real example. For Independence Day, the class learned all about America, the flag, the pledge of allegiance, some history, etc. - and they are only 3 years old. He can write his name, draw and cut out shapes, etc. - impressive. The teachers and other staff members are very engaged and organize several special events for children and parents each month. We just had our Family Fun Day, where all parents were invited to play and eat with the children. Everyone enjoyed it a lot. My younger son Nico cannot wait to join Stagg Street Center when he turns 2."
"My twin boys are currently attending and love going everyday. Teachers are caring and I found the rate to be the most affordable in the area. Premises is kept spotless and weekly curriculum is posted for parents. I highly recommend."
"They try to charge me 450 for a total of 4 full days in school . . Even if you child attend 1 day out the week they will charge you the full week . Scammers"
