About the Omusubi Gonbei おむすび権米衛
Omusubi Gonbei is a restaurant located at 595 River Road, Edgewater, New Jersey, United States, dedicated to promoting the consumption of rice and supporting Japanese farmers and agriculture. Our delicious Omusubi rice balls are a reflection of our commitment to this mission. The founder was inspired to create Omusubi Gonbei after witnessing the decline in rice consumption while working in the Middle East. Our goal is to expand the role of rice in Japanese cuisine, increase rice consumption, and support sustainable agricultural practices.
Omusubi is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of rice and various fillings wrapped in Nori (seaweed). These palm-sized rice balls are convenient and versatile, perfect for a snack, meal, office lunch, or picnic. Rice is a nutritious staple food in Japan, rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Omusubi is a well-balanced and nutritious option, suitable for those with dietary restrictions as it is gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
The history of Omusubi dates back over 2000 years, originating in the Yayoi era. Our menu offers a variety of traditional and modern flavors, carefully crafted to satisfy your taste buds. We invite you to experience the delicious and authentic flavors of Omusubi at Omusubi Gonbei.

Reviews of Omusubi Gonbei おむすび権米衛
"- huge massive rice ball - small shrimp inside and the majority is rice - you feel like you’re eating a massive rice ball - rice isn’t seasoned, so it can get bland - tons of selection on flavors Overall, I felt like I was eating a ball of rice. The ratio to actual meat is terrible. 2 will fill you up, but on rice."
"Commuting to the NJ from the mainland took around ~45 minutes, but worth heading to Mitsuwa Marketplace! Especially, during the afternoon while the onigiri being made! These onigiri were unreal, the rice didn't need to be that good. If you plan on getting 4, just save yourself any regrets and double your order. Also, if wondering what to order, at least pick up one spam musubi, even better just pick up two. Out of this world experience and extremely cost effective meal."
"A lot of rice for the regular ones. The bomb is good has more food inside"
"Authentic onigori Food - not a whole lot of ingredients. they use Japanese rice. Variety of choices to add flavor. We also had the chicken karaage which was crispy and juicy Ambiance - it's in a food court of mitsuwa so cafeteria feel. Cost - it seems a little pricey for rice with a little meat, but it fills you up and well worrh it Service - counter service."
"Omusubi Gonbei specializes in Omusubi, or rice ball. They open earlier than other restaurants in the Mistuwa food court, so if you get there too early and hungry, you can try these guys. It is interesting how gourmet rice balls are becoming popular, who can justify their high price point for rice balls nowadays with its good demand for them. This place, like all the others in Mitsuwa, is cash only. They have ATM machine if you forgot to bring cash. They offer many varieties of gourmet rice balls, and they are made with Japanese seaweed. They all looked really good, it was not easy to choose. We tried The Bomb, Cha-Shu-Pork, Fried Oyster, Spam, Spicy Tuna and Mentaiko. They were all pretty good. It is a nice size, not too small, with good amount of fillings for most of them. I did like their gourmet rice balls, I liked the big size, and I thought the quality was high. I can see the price point of their items are not so bad when you consider the size and quality. I would like to try more of their rice ball creations. Read my full review of this spot and food on my food blog, foodlovergilr."
