"Dr joe is outstanding. My 5.5 year old daughter had both tongue and lip ties that my sister noticed. Over the first few years of life since I didn't breastfeed I didn't notice any issues. However she alsways spoke with a lisp. Not one that you couldn't understand but definitely there. Finally at a sick visit with a pediatrician I asked about it and the dr said oh no big deal she can move her tongue but a few months later at a well visit I saw an associate and she told me to have it taken care of. She referred me to a few oral surgeons but I wasn't sure if I was comfortable with her being under general anesthesia for it. That lead me to dr merola. I'll begin by saying I live in New Jersey and am a self pay patient. Went to see Dr Joe for a consult in Staten Island and was literally blown away by the education I received in an hour consult about her ties. She grinded her teeth , snored slightly and was always constipated. I couldn't understand how this was all related but Dr Joe explained all of it in a way that I completely understood. It just made sense. He recommended myofunctional therapy where she was assessed with other issues which also led me to an amazing orthodontist near me. With a pallet expander and the therapy it came time for a release. His bedside manner is unparalleled and that includes his assistant as well. But his brilliance and common sense is what keeps me coming back. She is just 10 days out of the release and her speech has improved no more snoring and her constipation issues have improved immensely. The team effort of Dr Joe, his staff, the myofunctional therapist and the orthodontist have led to improvements in my daughter that I didn't even know needed improving. If there were more stars he would definitely get them. Truly a gem. The combo of his playfulness that is lacking in so many pediatric doctors and his brilliance has us never wanting to leave the office!!"
