Reviews of Belmont at Freemason Apartments
"Nice place downtown. Very convenient for walking around and experiencing downtown Norfolk."
"I have been a resident at Belmont Freemason going on 3 plus years and I couldn’t be happier with the property! From the leasing office agents to the residents one could not offer a more professional and amazing place to live. I highly recommend this property to anyone who enjoys peace and cleanliness and respect! Hats off and congratulations for a persistent and continued job well done day in and day out!"
"I will preface this by saying that I have never written a google review before but my experience with Belmont was so frustrating that I feel obligated to document my experience to those who may be treated similar to myself. When I first moved in I was unable to tour my actual apartment prior to signing due to living far away and working a full time job. Somebody was able to tour a mode apartment for me but I was unaware of the specifics of the units that were available Igor the floor plan in which I was interested. The only apartments mentioned during this tour were not on the ground floor which was very important to me. With this being the case when I selected an apartment from the online portal I assumed that as the first number was a four the apartment was on the fourth floor. I learned upon moving in that my apartment was on the ground floor as the number signifying the floor was the second which I have never seen at any hotel or apartment. While this could’ve been prevented with more thorough questioning on my part I do believe that I should’ve been given some notice that the apartment I selected was on the ground floor considering the confusing system of numbering apartments at Belmont. Actually living at Belmont was never good but mostly fine. What is deceiving is the way they market themselves as luxury when the only thing that reflects this is the price. The amenities are poor and the community is non-existent. The exercise room is tiny and borderline unusable. The parking garage has constant break-ins. The appliances and fixtures are cheap and consistently break. It is also very noisy as any people or cars going down the street are shockingly loud inside the apartments and the Tide is constantly passing through and rings it’s bell whenever it passes even late at night. It was incredibly difficult to sleep due to this noise and how bright the apartment stayed at night even with blackout curtains. All of this bothered me but was tolerable. However, upon moving out Belmont staff decided to charge me for several things despite my completion of the entire move out checklist they provided. One thing was explicitly not in the checklist. One was due to me not performing a 5 second task that I had forgotten to do prior to turning in my keys. But worst of all, one was for a defect that was there when I moved in and was explicitly told not to worry about when I was given my keys. Not only did they try to up charge me, they were deceitful and then refused to admit any wrong when confronted. I chose to live at Belmont because although it was expensive it seemed to not deal with the issues of other complexes in the area that were cheaper. After a year and all of these frustrating experiences I can definitively say you are better off saving the money and looking somewhere else."
"I would have gave this place negative star if I could. I’ve been living here for over a year, great experience with the previous management team. Recently, the residents in this building have experienced multiple vehicle break-ins, and my self have had two break-ins within 2 months. The response from the management is very disappointing. The general attitude is “ we are sorry about your experience, however, Norfolk police and the security company we hired have been experiencing manning issue, therefore, there is nothing we can do at this point, just lock your car and good luck, and by the way, we are not responsible for any of your bill, lost work hour and psychological distress because of this ” they don’t even bother to clean up the shattered glasses in the parking lot, I mean it’s everywhere, it’s literally everywhere. I get it maybe police can only do so much because of their manning issue, but can the management or the company take a little more more ownership about this issue? Obviously solely rely on police and security company doesn’t work, and what else can we do to protect the tenants, if you really care about your tenants. Aggressive communication about your plan of action will be greatly appreciated, instead, whenever you express your concern, they would find an excuse to talk you down, felt very much like being gaslighted. Compared to the money lost during the break-in, lost of work hour and the humongous stress it caused is more detrimental, I am a mission essential personnel to my workplace, I was on call that day my car glasses was shattered, because of this reason, I couldn’t make it to work, and that loss, the damage it caused to my mission can never be compensated in anyway."
"The response by the owner to Mr. Williams is VERY DISAPPOINTING. But at least our recycled trash is safe from theft (read on): 1) Anyone can walk into the building’s 7 parking levels, stairwells or elevators. The owner does not address the open-access nature of the private garage as being a significant factor to the 15 reported incidents this weekend, or the 38 reported incidents since October. 2) The reported incidents for 200 YORK are disproportionately higher than the surrounding community. Mr. Williams says “the team at Belmont has not taken the concerns seriously and just blame it on a ‘Norfolk’ problem.” 3) The City of Norfolk offers an excellent web resource called the "Open Data Portal" that provides data relating to city services, including police incident reports. There are 15 reported vehicle incidents for 200 Block of York from this past weekend, and 38 since October 2022. The incidence of vehicle larcenies/vandalism appears to be SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER for 200 YORK than any of the neighboring community (see photo from police incident spreadsheet) 4) The owner says “We have hired a security company”—Was the security company present during the weekend incidents? If so, is the security company effective? (Mr. Williams says “They hired an overnight security guard that sits in his car on the third floor asleep most of the night.”) 5) If the owner fails to see this as anything but “issues in the area” then is the owner truly addressing the issue? 6) Neighboring apartment complexes in Norfolk use access-controlled garage roll up doors, controlling both vehicle entry and preventing unauthorized pedestrian entry (see photo) 7) NOTE: Our recycled trash is thankfully SAFE. The recycle room, just inside the parking garage, has keyfob access, so people can not walk into the parking garage and steal the cardboard boxes and plastic bottles that residents throw away (see photo) 8) To the owners: Your residents would appreciate if you would take this seriously and not just pass the blame to “issues in the area”, especially when the data does not match. Your residents would also appreciate if you would directly update us on what your plans are moving forward. We would appreciate that much more than the “Gift Wrapping Party” you invited us to the morning after the weekend incident. If your plan is to let things remain as they are, then please tell us so that we can seek a safer environment before car break-ins turn into something worst. 9) The photos are all from a single weekend in this parking garage. 10) I would love to update this review to include the steps you have taken to improve any security shortfalls and the good things about this apartment community."
