Reviews of Edward S. Brinkley Nature Preserve
"its a short walk but a nice one. saw some beautiful butterflies, a praying mantis, and a bald eagle flying with some hawks & turkey vultures. very cool"
"Whoever maintains these grounds does an excellent job. A nice stroll through a meadow with a short forest walk that leads to an overlook of the coast. Simple but satisfying. A little more than 2 miles fill loop."
"Gorgeous meadows, bird blind is wonderful. Great variety of birds, use ebird sound ID! Dancing butterflies of all kinds. Turtles. And an easy flat walk to the water. Plus the preserve is in honor of a wonderful human being."
"Beautiful hideaway on the ESVA. I hike with my service dog out to the overlook for photography purposes. I've visited in every season but early Spring and late Fall are my favorites. You'll see raptors as well as shorebirds, waterfowl, some songbirds and smaller woodpeckers. Summer it's too buggy for me to enjoy. Winter doesn't bring much in terms of wildlife observations but you can score some amazing atmospheric shots from the overlook. Overall, it's a wonderful place to go and sit a spell, and let the world revolve without you for a bit. Bring your own portable chair to the overlook and you may well spend an entire day there! Bonus - Come in the late morning and you're likely to catch the F-22 Raptors and T-38 Talons making their way back to Langley from maneuvers off the ESVA coast."
"Excellent winter birding spot with a blind on the northwest corner of the small lake, plus a mowed trail heading east along pine grove edge through weedy fields. I expected to only spend a few minutes, but I followed the trail and found it goes through the woods (where two woodcocks flushed, giving good views as they landed nearby). Continuing on, I was surprised to come to a boardwalk in the swampy woods leading to a fantastic overlook of the vast marshes and mudflats (at low tide) to the east (glad I had my spotting scope). The lake had good numbers and variety of waterbirds, but many were hidden along the shore. The blind helped, but the mowed trail on the west side of the lake allowed for finding more of the hidden birds. At 52 species of birds in 2 hours, it was my best single stop on a several day birding trip of the Delmarva Peninsula. I originally went to the Google Map site, which is the county landfill. I suspected a hint of a joke, since Ned Brinkley, as a birder’s birder, would have appreciated being honored by such a gull haven. No such joke though, since the Northampton County Preserve at the northwest corner of the lake is where the preserve actually is (parking, mowed trail to bird blind and beyond). If not birding, a nice place for a short hike, and especially to get a good view of the salt marshes."
