"Believe it or not, this is where Arlington, Virginia got its name! In 1670, John Custis II built a manor house here on Virginia's Eastern Shore and named it 'Arlington' after a village in Gloucestershire, England the birthplace and early home of his father. The wealth to create Arlington grew from fields in the surrounding 1000 acres. Virginia's finest 17th century mansion rose from planting tobacco in well drained sandy loam and factoring shipments to Europe. Many years later, Custis women married George Washington and Robert E. Lee, carrying Arlington's name and the Eastern Shore memory to other Virginia fields. (Arlington Foundation)"
"Peaceful, historical resting place of settlers on the Eastern Shore. Gravel parking off street. Mowed walking trails."
"This was a strange adventure during an overall strange vacation. We arrived to a large field with paths mowed through the tall grass. These paths lead to signs with information. The tomb itself seems to be in someone’s backyard which was also strange. Plus as we were leaving we saw that creepy deer foot and now we’re definitely hexed."
"Not much to see. Sadly, the gravesite and signage is neglected. The grave is not far from an area that had the ruins of Custis' house. The area overlooks a pretty tributary (?) of the Bay."
"It's the small things in life that turn out to be most interesting. Stopping at this tomb made this trip to the cape very satisfying. The history outlined at this landmark sheds light onto the evolution of Cape Charles. Go take a look and read the signage!"
