Reviews of Cape Charles Historic District
"Visited with family last week. I was stun by the shops and growth of little cape Charles, so very charming. We ate at the Shanty restaurant.. excellent food and location beautiful. My family history goes back to 1889. Karpa family of Polish descent bought a house near Catholic school and church. My grandmother was born at that house in 1904, last of 9 living children. My mother grew up there til family moved to Newport News maybe 1940. We continued to return to visit by ferry til bridge completed. Family buried in old cemetery… brought Mom over on Mother’s Day in 2011, dinner on the boat dock. The locals said stores are closed on Tuesdays, although several were open (the day we recently visited in October) , still had a wonderful time. Look forward to Spring and summer and a stay over weekend, beach beautiful. So much family history. ❤️❤️"
"Absolutely beautiful area. We enjoyed it so much , the quaintness of the town. So clean and people are friendly."
"Nice little town! Spent a week here all the shops are nice food is good not much to do for kids and tons of sea weed in the water but we had fun!"
"We stayed at a local KOA which we highly recommend, part of our ventures brought us into this quaint small town. The beach is lovely and has beautiful sunsets. Lots of places for great photos. Even though there were a few events, the crowds stayed manageable and the people were respectable. Never at any point did the population feel overwhelming or on the verge of unbearable. People were cordial and laid-back. The vibe was great. There was a noticeable sewage smell near the end of the street where the road ends at the beach entrance, yes its right near the porta-potties as one commenter noticed. It is definitely not the potties but something in the sewer right there. Not sure but hopefully it is a temporary issue. It was not overwhelming but noticeable."
"The beach is perfect. In April it is still cool, but beautiful. The town in April leaves a lot to be desired. There are 3 coffee shops and two bakeries. The bakeries open only on the weekends. On Tuesday there was literally not one place open in the entire town to get a cup of coffee. On Wednesdays there is one coffee shop open at 9 but there was a line by 8:45 and all of the outdoor tables were full before it opened. Tuesday night there were two restaurants open in the entire historic district and both had more than an hour wait. So my advice is that if you come before May there is nothing to do besides the beach. The water is too cold to swim and the fishing captains say the fish aren’t biting. There are only 6 stores open in town during the week and they were very cute but we had gone through them all in an hour,"
