"This is a rare Wilderness area in Virginia, so it’s good that access is quite limited. We found Ramsey’s Draft flowing at a normal level, but the main trail required wading boots, as did the the Bridge Hollow Trail, which leads to the Oak Ridge Trail. Despite the guidance at the trailhead, there is no longer a bridge to take you to the Oak Ridge Trail. Since we weren’t prepared to get wet, that left us only with the Road Hollow trail, which I do not recommend. As it’s name suggests, it follows US 250, so you will hear trucks constantly. Also, most public info says this trail is only 2 miles to the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, but it’s actually at least 3 miles, which makes it difficult to complete any loop, so we were stuck with a boring 6-mile out and back. Moral of the Story: Go only if you’re prepared for Wilderness and skip the Road Hollow trail."
"Beautiful but would NOT recommend going during tick season... Was not smart of us..."
"Does anyone know where the name came from?, or which Ramsey and when was it named?"
"I have hiked and camped in this rugged and glorious wild land from before the PATC Sexton Cabin was dismantled when Ramsey's Draft was declared a wilderness area. The trails offer spectacular views as well as deep rocky ravines running with clear cold water that offer a welcome refresher after a long, hot hike. I have many fond memories and lots of wild stories from these trips and you will too - if you are prepared. This is rocky country populated with deer and bears that will richly reward the well-prepared and properly conditioned hiker with a real sense of wilderness."
"I love this area for hiking. It gets remote quickly and losing the trail because of overgrowth and weather damage, makes it a technically challenging and awesome overnight trek destination"
