Reviews of Salt Ponds Public Beach
"Not a public beach, no parking, gated community blocks entrance"
"private condos and gated communities occupying what should be public beach"
"Not ideal for a family day at the beach. Maybe a nice 30 minute walk. A public beach that caters none to the public beach needs or wants. Especially for safety."
"WHAT YOU SEE IS ALL YOU GET! The City of Hampton, having destroyed the quaint post-bellum crab fishing and boat harbor town of Hampton in favor of new offices for lawyers--with mixed results--, has shoveled tourist traffic out to the now thoroughly developed former township/resort of Buckroe Beach, which faces directly out to the Chesapeake Bay. As we all know waterfront property is at a premium, so virtually all of old North 1st Street, which was pretty much 1940's beach rustic has been swept away in favor of the Virginia Beach SlapUp Multistory Style built in this century. So I suppose many people, young or old, would find this drive up North 1st Street educational. Salt Ponds--which at one point I believe was supposed to have been preserved as a natural habitat for birds, frogs and snails--has proved too profitable a piece of land for developers to resist, and the natural consequence is that you can drive North from Buckroe Avenue on North 1st Street all the way to this beach at what is technically "Salt Ponds Point" without seeing the water: just big houses. There is virtually no place to park legally. If all of the "Local Guides" who have rated this park five stars showed up on the same day, their enthusiasm might be dampened. I don't feel there are adequate facilities of any kind for the beach to be open to the public on any premise, there is NO FOOD FOR ABOUT A MILE TO THE SOUTH and all of the local property owners REALLY resent visitors. The beach today was clean, certainly, and empty, certainly, as you may see from my accompanying photographs. There are clean-looking trash receptacles. But after all, if you are not a nearby property owner there to walk your designer dog early in the morning--which may be the only practical use I can envision for this patch of land--I would recommend you think twice before piling your family and friends into your Estate Wagon for a day at this beach."
"Nice quiet beach. It doesn't have huge waves like some areas do so that makes it great for young children. There are several large clam shells to find. Neat place. You parallel park along a street."
