Reviews of Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center
"We started at the visitor’s center and took a guided tour. Our guide, Emily, was amazing and so knowledgeable. No canned scripts… just an amazing grasp of the rich history of Fort Monroe. Afterwards, she answered all of our questions and helped us to understand other features of the site. Thank you! We’ll be back soon."
"Very interesting museum; great history lesson; also visited the Casemate Museum. Virginia Museum of History and Culture: Virginia Journeys trip."
"Beautiful, stunning, view of history located in Hampton. Very educational, clean, organized well operated. Gives an excellent look into the time period of how, and when Fort Monroe was created. Gives the history of black slaves seeking freedom. Bring the kids or bring a friend to visit this treasure."
"Visited in July 2023. It's a very new, nice and clean visitor center with modern design elements. The kids loved the giant touch screen digital map when you first enter the building. The bathrooms are on the right and very clean and includes water fountain with waterbottle filler. To the left is the gift shop which includes the NPS cancellation stamp. Also to the left is the main office desk area which was staffed very well. They provide the junior ranger books for the park as well which can mostly be done inside this visitor center. There is plenty of space to walk around between the display exhibits and many of them are interactive which my kids all liked. There was a theather upstairs along with a observation deck which was pretty cool. There is a elevator that takes you up and down to all 3 floors. The lower floor is just where you go out to cross the bridge into the fort. We were also told rangers do walking tours a few times a day but we arrived later in the day and we had to decide between that or checking out the casemate museum over in the fort. We picked the casemate museum as it was also very hot outside. The casemate museum requies tickets but they are free to pick up at the visitor center. You fill out a form and they give you a sticker to take over to the museum. The museum has a door bell you ring for someone to let you in. There are also no picures or video allowed in the casemate museum. They have a scavenger hunt for the kids and the prize is a sticker. Kids like that and it helped give us adults more time to look around and read the different exhibits. Since we arrived so late and only spent about 90 mins total at the Fort we would visit again to check out all the things we missed. Another tip is to watch the video on Ft. Monroe's NPS website before going as it gives a great synopsis of the history of the fort."
"Where do I begin? Beautiful, meaningful art work, fabulous architecture, and so many interesting displays that I see something I missed the visit before. Everyone is very helpful not only with the Visitor Center but preparing you for your visit to Fort Monroe. We live not far and always enjoy all the history of the Fort and all the major events that occurred in our own back yard!"
