"Out of all the places I've rented in the Richmond area, they have been the worst. I'm not going to waste my time listing everything off as most other reviews have that covered already. I just want my security deposit back and this seems to be the only route that won't cost me more money in order to do that. I moved out in April of this year and even after the final move out process and notification of the amount I should be receiving back from my deposit, they still won't and haven't sent it. It's been 6 MONTHS, y'all. They keep telling me that accounting is waiting on my completed move out file from management so they can process my check. As most of us plebs know, landlords have 45 days to return a security deposit after move out. I did the math for y'all, Southern Stove; it's been 174 days. GIVE. ME. MY. MONEY. PLEASE. Also, be wary of any positive reviews. For example, Abby Asay, who posted a glowing review 8 months ago about the "attentive leasing staff", was (and maybe still is) a leasing agent herself there at the time. You can find someone with the same last name post a 5 star review, singling out Abby as being great, just one month prior. And another just 5 months ago! Laughable. They're all scammers. Save your wallet and peace of mind."

"Moved in about a month ago. Three weeks in I witnessed my neighbor having police dust for finger prints in his truck outside in the parking lot at 8am- I assumed that his truck was broken into. Last night my car was broken into…apparently this is a common thing here at SSL. *Update*: The management of this complex does THE BARE minimum to keep this place running. Most of the parking lots are completely pitch black at night, where you can barely see what's in front of you while walking. Making most of the parking here the perfect place for thieves to CONTINUE breaking into cars here. They don't even bother meddling with the locks, they full on break your windshield or windows as if they know the residents here are easy pickings. I've seen at least 4 cars with broken windows in less than 2 months. This complex is an extension of the local college but for grown adults, so if you have little kids, don't anticipate a kid friendly experience. The walls here are as thin as 1- ply paper, I can literally hear all of my neighbor's conversations, when they sneeze, coughs...whatever as if they we are in the same room. The gym is extremely outdated and never gets cleaned for some odd reason. There's been an obvious leak in there for a while which they ignore, which is bound to turn into mold if it hasn't already. The maintenance staff is the best thing about this place, they're good people that go above and beyond when it comes to apartment repairs in my experience. The main entrances here are rarely ever locked because the owners refuse to update the security, for as much as we pay to live here we could at least have automatic doors that lock consistently. I've seen teenagers walk into the complex to smoke in the basement on the regular (hence the non-smoking/ trespassing signs in the stairways) , seen homeless people walk right in during the middle of the night as if they live here. I've been here for about 5 months and even the locals know that the owners of this complex could not care less about our experience. The parking spaces here are almost half the size of regular parking spots, if anything that is the only security here that protects your vehicle....the spots are so tight that you have to crawl out of your car just to park...no joke. In all, there are many risk associated with living here, I could go on and on, but I honestly don't have the time. It's frustrating asl and feels like a constant slap to the face. Don't say you weren't warned."

"Great place to live if you enjoy being disrespected, lied to, threatened with constant surveillance and don't mind regularly finding blood, urine and feces in the elevators. I have two years of stories and emails to back a lot of them up. Most shockingly though is the day I was in labor they tried to bring random strangers in for an 'occupied tour'. They knew my situation because I had already asked them 3 times to not do occupied tours and being told I would be taken off the list. They showed up TWICE, so even after telling them I was actively laboring they still tried to come a second time later that day. They do not care about residents on a professional level, much less even basic human compassion. Update: SSL responded to my review and only addressed the cleanliness. They claim I am lying about this. Look at other reviews, I am not. There are even pictures on some of the reviews."

"I’m only giving two stars based off a recent incident and exchange of words I had with the leasing office regarding my windshield being shattered in their lot, that is practically midnight dark due to several lights being out. They gave the detective assigned to my case the run around for two days only to find out the cameras do not work at all, and the perpetrator who smashed my windshield, costing me close to $500 goes free. Instead of apologizing and admitting the deceit and dishonesty regarding this, they commenced to go back and forth with me making excuses as to why the camera did not work and how it isn’t their fault. The property management team lacks so much concern and empathy regarding this which is unsettling because for the prices the tenants pay in rent the least we can have is a secure place to park our vehicles. Aside from that, the call box is still broken after years of complaints from senior tenants, the gym has very outdated and non operable equipment, and the elevators are often soiled with pet waste (fecal matter and urine) which takes days to get rectified. I will say however maintenance does respond to requests fairly quickly and are extremely kind and respectful. It is also fairly quiet on most days (aside from the train but that’s common sense) so if you have a family or need a quiet environment this is suitable (at least where i reside in the building). Other than that, the rent is fairly high (1700.00 for a two bedroom with nothing included but subpar internet) for a place that can’t help you if your car gets vandalized or broken into despite the constant advertisement and threats of surveillance, fairly unkept common areas, free weights in the gym that look like they will give you tetanus, weight bench that will give you abrasions on your skin due to the ripped leather, a treadmill that definitely was made in the 90s and breaks down in the middle of your workout, and no working call box. *UPDATE* it has been three weeks and the back parking lot is still pitch black as if there aren’t car break ins out here every week with no working cameras. Changing my review to one star. *ANOTHER UPDATE** Here we are two months later and the lights in the parking lot are STILL out and there has been at least one break in every week in that area."
