Reviews of Embark Center
"My request took over a month, every time I called to get an update on my request, it was a different story every time, and every customer service rep had a different answer for me each time I called. I’ve now cancelled my RESP with them because of their subpar service, and it’s now been 45 days and I still haven’t seen my cancellation."
"Embark Center for Self-Directed Learning provided two of our daughters a deep and rich learning experience this year. We saw incredible personal growth in both girls, and they learned skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Within the Embark community, they learned to co-create guidelines and rules, how to hold the community accountable to these guidelines and rules, and how to advocate for themselves and other members of the community. Wouldn't it be great if we had all learned these skills as children and adolescents?"
"We've been an Embark family for 18 months. It has been an amazing experience for us. One of our children had great difficulty with the public school system in Loudoun County. After years of meetings and having an IEP in place we became extremely frustrated with the lack of regard for the recommendations given by our child's therapist and psychiatrist. We were struggling to find the right fit for our child who wanted to learn, but could not do it in the rigid format the public school system laid out. To our great relief Embark was a perfect match. More specifically, the adult leaders and the other young members made learning possible. Each child is encouraged to learn at their own pace as the adults facilitate their learning process. They have the best chance to grasp and understand the subject matter this way rather than spitting out what they were given to memorize or do in a pre-boxed format. Our child's anxiety about attending "school" has melted away. They have made friendships with children who don't make them feel like an outcast or unwanted. That alone has made the quality of their young life enormously better. If you are looking for a place for your child to feel welcome and supported rather than pressured to learn assembly line fashion, I encourage you to come in and learn more about Embark Center. It has been no less than life changing for our child!"
"Having non-traditional education options for all learners and mentors in Northern Virginia is extremely important and Embark's self-directed education presence is a standout. Since finding it two years ago, it has changed my life by providing an outlet for me to support youth agency in personal growth and self-determination. Embark's community is one of optimism and opportunity for those whose lives and goals do not mesh successfully with traditional K-12 classrooms. Nothing beats hanging with Embark members discussing the finer points of chicken rearing or critiquing US immigration policy."
"The Embark Center for Self-Directed Education has been a dynamic part of my son's life for four years. The center provides an atmosphere that allows students to grow and learn based upon their own individual needs and goals. Each member is invited to participate and make their own contributions to the community. The support that is provided to both families and members is invaluable. The Embark Center is not only a learning environment but a place where students can grow, stretch their ideas and blaze their own path forward. Our family appreciates the center and the community for being a positive and vital piece of our son's educational journey."
