Reviews of Health Brigade
"Health brigade is a wonderful organization in Richmond. Whether you are in need of simple knowledge/education the average doc might not offer or are in need of routine testing, support groups or specialty therapy, health brigade makes sure you are comfortable / at ease and given every tool you need for whatever your dealing with. Thank you guys for your hard work and dedication to the RVA community. Shout out to Darius - you are a rockstar and made me feel safe and at ease. Thank you!"
"Every time you call about transgender services, the phone keeps ringing and you get sent to voicemail and you’re asked to leave one and they’ll get back to you. I’ve called five days in a row and at different times of the day at one point and still no answer. I still call every now and then every few days and still am getting nothing. I guess no one answers the phone here. They hire people and tell them, “whatever you do, don’t answer the phones when people call. No matter what.” Lol."
"It saddens me greatly to leave these comments, but I want to help others from getting hurt like me. To quote executive director, Karen Legato, “I wouldn’t trust going to Health Brigade as a trauma survivor myself.” Which in general is a ridiculous thing to say and unfortunately, I found out too late after building what I thought was a trusting relationship with my therapist there, Dr. Azria-Evans. Her inability to discuss, and I believe understand, the fundamental concepts of consent along with severe victim blaming and ableist comments from their psychiatrist Dr. Blum has greatly impacted me. I would go so far as to say that they have acted dangerously and recklessly in regards to my safety and well-being. I still have nightmares every night about my experiences, flashbacks, and other symptoms. After attempting to stand up for myself, despite acknowledging the harm I experienced, I was victimized further. I was screamed at by Karen (Executive Director) and had much of the trauma and experiences I had shared with Dr. Azria-Evans thrown back in my face. I was told if I had come to her sooner, she would have taken action which is frustrating because it’s never too late to do something. Once I started speaking up for myself, they refused to give me important documentation which Dr. Azria-Evans and I had had already started working on together. Their continuous words and actions have harmed me greatly and continue to do so. At one point, I told Karen Legato that the way she was treating me was unprofessional. Her response was to say, “Yeah, I get it. I know.” At the crux of it, that is the biggest issue. They know how they treated me was unacceptable, but they don’t care. I may be low-income, but I deserve to be treated with respect. I know people may find fault with me for criticizing them. I recognize they have helped people in need but that does not take away the harm they are causing either. Like many organizations, it’s the leadership that is toxic while the rest of the employees are the heart and soul and do all the work. I am grateful to many of the staff that I met there. I have done my best to handle this internally only to be stonewalled, abused, and silenced. That is why I’m writing this. At the very least, I should have been able to speak to the executive director about my concerns without being screamed at and belittled."
"Dr. Klein has the worst attitude of any doctor I’ve seen in years. She clearly thinks very highly of herself, but treats patients like they don’t matter. If you’re at all frustrated or upset, she will step in and get escalate the situation, condescend you, call you names, and threaten to terminate your care. Seems like doctors should consider the pain and discomfort patients are in before antagonizing them. This place will probably be good to you at first, but don’t expect a callback, no matter how many voicemails you leave. It appears I’m not the first person to be repeatedly told that my prescriptions are sent to my pharmacy, only to find they still haven’t been sent. Volunteers will tell you the wrong open hours for the clinic. If you have to go here, make sure to get Dr. Lund."
"All these negative reviews are by folks who want free care but too spoilt to be grateful for Richmond to have this wonderful Clinic. I have been a patient here for over 4 years. Over that time, I have me Dr. Klein, and several providers, volunteer staff, etc. Dr. Klein was the utmost professional and ensured that I get what care I needed after the first visit. Each time I have gone there, I have been treated with the respect. I have chronic issues and they were more than willing to take on my complexities , refer me out to specialists through Access Now as needed. Yes, sometimes there was a wait to get certain paperwork processed, but that is true for ANY Healthcare Practice in the USA! They accept ALL people regardless of color, gender, faith, body shape or size, etc. I would not be here today feeling so much better, if it had not been for them. They work to get you medications, lab work, radiology tests, etc. what ever is needed for one to get good care - ALL for FREE! Yes, they do ask if you can donate upto $5 before a visit. That is small change for all. IF you can afford a cell phone, you can afford to pay that, and it is not mandatory. There were days that I did not have any money on me, and they were fine with that. I was not treated any differently. So stop whining and be grateful that Richmond has a FREE Clinic!"
