"Jessica, P.A. and staff were VERY thoughtful and thorough. From testing to outcome the staff was professional and compassionate. They managed my pain extremely well and explained my diagnosis in detail. All in all an excellent experience. Thank you for taking such good care of me. As a fellow healthcare worker it was refreshing to have this good of an experience."
"I came here yesterday since I was experiencing really bad pain. The wait time wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. I want to say the PA named Zoe was amazing. Very sweet and made me feel so heard. I didn’t catch the LPN’s name who was assisting her, but she was also so sweet and understanding. They helped ease my pain and made my concerns feel very valid. I also want to add that there was a nurse whose name I did catch, named Daphne, who I felt was very insensitive and needs to watch her tone when she is handling patients. My boyfriend tried to come back with me, and she immediately said in a kind of snappy tone that he wasn’t able to come back because there was no room for visitors. Everyone else in the waiting area in the back had someone who could sit with them, and there were empty chairs in my room and in the waiting area where I was. I was in a wheelchair because it hurt to even walk, and she said something during our conversations like “You’re gonna have to sit in a regular chair eventually”, which I found to be insensitive, because why is that your first response when I say it hurts to even walk? She also came back later needing my arm for something, but I was super tired honestly and confused on which arm, and her tone in telling me which arm just sounded frustrated and annoyed. I understand we all have bad days, but how you say things is important. I would come back to this hospital if I ever needed to, but I wouldn’t want to deal with her if I came back. Not to feel like my needs aren’t important and like I’m not truly heard or understood. Overall, the care was great, I would have just appreciated being able to have someone with me like everyone else in the waiting area could, and a little more heart from that particular nurse."
"I went to the ER around 1130 PM on 12/18/23 after experiencing head pressure & feeling lightheaded /blurred vision after a shower (which caused me to collapse and need to lay down for about 30 mins ). They took me back pretty quickly and immediately got me hooked for fluids / heart monitor . The staff over night was pretty amazing (Jennifer specifically was GREAT). Throughout the night - early morning is when it really started to go down hill . I had lots of tests done , waited forever for results . The DR had came in to tell me results for blood and urine and cat scan still weren’t available , which was a lie bc I have the Sentara My Chart app and got the results about an hour before they came in to tell me they still weren’t available . That was my first red flag . I was given a “migraine cocktail” to attempt to get some sleep . My family member left so I was alone at that point . I paged the nurses for TWO HOURS letting them know I needed to be unhooked to go use the restroom and no one came . I was at the point where I had gotten my self out of bed and was attempting to unhook my self just be able to get close enough to the bed side toilet which was all the way at the front of the room & the nurses only then came in bc my heart rate was so high from me moving around . They unhooked me and I used the restroom and NO ONE came back in to hook me back up to any monitors until about 10 am . So from about 6-10 am I wasn’t being monitored at all . I asked for food around 1030am & it took about 2.5 hours for someone to bring me food . By that point I was starving and had family bring me food . The whole rest of the day no nurses came to check on me . I had to figure out how to use the heart rate monitor machine to “pause” and unhook my self to go to the rest room my self bc I would have urinated on my self waiting all day . I was waiting the entire time for an echocardiogram which wasn’t scheduled until 145 pm on the 12/19 which I found out was bc no one put a rush on it . Around 1pm a nurse came in and said they were taking my room for a more critical patient , refused to admit me bc I didn’t have an official diagnosis & put me in the hall way on a bed . The dr came in to say it was against medical advice for me to leave , but with the bed side manor I was getting , lack of nurses availability and overall anxiety the stay had caused I agreed to do the echo and signed my self out bc I refused to sit in the hallway and they still refused to admit me . (My hospital notes clearly stated all of those details , but conveniently left out the fact that they put me in the hall which was my main decision to leave ) (pic attached) Zena Longvall was the dr who called with my echocardiogram results & she had put a rush and before I even made it home she had called with the results (which came back normal ) . The only sense of urgency I had received during the entire process ! I will under NO circumstances ever use this ER again for my self or son & I 100% will tell any and everyone to avoid it at all costs . I have sympathy for our nurses and I understand being understaffed but there’s no excuse for the level of service I received ."
"This is the worst place to go if you're really dealing with pain. In the last 5 years, I have had at least 3 bad experiences with this place. My recent one was on December 4th, 23, at around 9 am. I arrived at the ER with the help of my wonderful neighbors. When the nurse showed up with one of those blue chairs, she was notified that I couldn't sit, that my best position was to be on my knees and hands. She came back with a colleague, and then I asked if I could get a stretcher instead, but they said no. I had to manage to step on the chair and stay on my knees during the check-in, after which the triage lady told me, "Go and have a seat." I stayed in this position for almost an hour, and my knees were hurting. Finally, I decided to find someone to drive me to ve VA Medical Center in Hampton, where I got the best treatment a human a being can receive. To make matter worse, they never know haw to bill my insurance. Sentara is the only place that sends me my medical bill even when I'm admitted in full military uniform and my ID. Another thing that struck me was how filthy that place was. See the attached pictures. I wish they would stop sending those generic replies and really take action to fix issues that have been raised. Patientt First sent me an apology letter just because I was in a room for too long. And did not complain. And they billed the insurance, not me. Do your job! Your generic apology can not cure anyone or bring them back to life!"
"I have spent the last 3 days here with my elderly mother whom has numerous health issues. We are from North Carolina and chose this location because she had been brought here 4 years ago by helicopter with kidney failure. I cannot say enough about the excellent care she has been giving here from the time we arrived till she was released. The ER experience was the most efficient I have witnessed in quite some time. She was admitted to the 4th floor where I cannot tell you who was the best nurse, doctor or other staff member here because they were all noticeably excellent in what they do. I have never felt so comfortable with a hospital team as I have with this experience here with my mother. Thanks to everyone here from the doctor’s, nurses, reception desk, cafeteria all the way down to the gift shop. This hospital is the best in my opinion. I appreciate the wonderful care each of you gave my mama and her loved ones that were staying with her during this difficult time. God Bless each one of you and thanks again for the excellent care each of you gave my mama."
