Reviews of Ashe Memorial Hospital
"I just visited the new Orthopedic department at Ashe Memorial hospital for knee problems. My treatment was wonderful. The staff made me feel like at old friend. Dr Turgeon took the time needed to examine my leg and explain what the problem was and possible treatment. My visit was great!"
"The Nurses, and X-RAY, and all staff were excellent. The doctor I saw was the worse doctor I have seen in my life. I was to sick to leave but I should have. I'll never go there again. That is doctor only. He didn't hear a thing I said, just put his head in the open door. If he was that afraid of germs he should have suited up. Most of all he did not listen to a word I told him."
"I will admit that it’s very difficult to staff a hospital in rural NC. The pay isn’t competitive and during the pandemic many experienced health care providers chose to no longer practice medicine. The excellent staff amh has is running thin and instead of increasing the pay to attract better employees amh pays travel nurses/providers exorbitantly higher rates and they loose quality employees. Consistency of care is virtually nonexistent. That being said, I am writing this review a year after the event and will try to stick to facts and leave the intense emotions out. I gave birth 12/08/22, it was my third child and I would rate that experience as a 6.85/10. While in active labor during a shift change I had several nurses chatting and mingling while I was pushing, which was aggravating and very unprofessional. Later that evening I got a spinal headache and then the next day a blood patch to fix the lack of spinal fluid from my epidural. It seemed to have worked, I told my doctor I wanted to go home and they discharged me. I called OB about 36 hours later stating the headache was back and unbearable. The nurse replied “ you can stay home and it will go away or you can go to the er for a CT scan of your spine.” I waited a little longer and the pain became even more unbearable, every movement hurt. Around 11am-ish I went to the ER and told them that I was told I needed a CT scan. They took me back, took my blood pressure, told me it was high and immediately called OB. 1pm-ish OB readmitted me to the maternity unit and started giving me caffeine intravenously. My blood pressure continued to raise, I was givin anxiety medication and I think around 5:00pm the nurses padded my bed and told me I might have a seizure. I think Around 6:30 I was told I was going to start a magnesium IV to fix the postpartum preeclampsia. My blood pressure was 190+- /90+- they tested it every ten minutes or so. Throughout this experience my family called health care providers hundreds of miles away and tried to figure out what was going on. Those providers were reaching out to Their colleagues to try and figure out why they hadn’t started giving me life saving magnesium, a standard treatment for preeclampsia hours before they prepared me for organ failure and seizures. My body began to process the magnesium, fluid started draining. My colostomy bag over flowing on the floor beneath me. No one told me the side effects of magnesium but I felt the closest to death I have ever felt. I sat and watched the urine build up on the floor with my head against the padded bed thinking I was going to die. No one explained to me that the magnesium would have the side effect of feeling like you were going to die. Fast forward through the next twelve months; billing issues from various departments, I think I’ve resolved everything; but I thought I had for months before I received another bill. FNP perforated my uterus which led to me going to the ER in Watauga ; A bacterial lung infection that was diagnosed as allergies that led to pleurisy. I followed up with urgent care for pain in my ribs and an uncontrollable cough, I was promptly told in the waiting room I wouldn’t be prescribed any pain medication. When I told them I thought I might have pneumonia they said I’d just need to go to the ER for imaging, I said the provider on call could order imaging instead of an ER visit. They sent me to my car for a Covid test and when I returned with a negative test they said the provider would order imaging. I asked if I could see a provider for a diagnosis because I did not have a medical degree and would like to have them assess me. It ended up being pleurisy, and was prescribed several medications. I went over the fact I was breast feeding and found out when filling my medications they weren’t compatible with BF. Urgent care did reach out to me after having the prescription filled to notify me that the medication wasn’t compatible with breast feeding. This is a year of treatment with AMH."
"My dad was in the hospital for two nights. The care he received during his stay was great. Everyone that came in showed concern and gave excellent care for my dad. He commented different times how nice everyone had been to him. Thank you to Ashe Memorial Hospital Staff."
"If 0 was available…The hospital never returned calls regarding medical records that could have saved me an additional copay at a specialist office. Left several messages months ago. Then had to call to try and set up patient account online. Guess what…call went back to medical records department that never called to begin with. After my postpartum daughter received medical insurance for NC, a provider was chosen that is affiliated with Ashe Memorial (actually located within Ashe Memorial), she tried to schedule a postpartum visit (w/ complications)…no return call. Her child is now 2yrs old. She has yet to receive a return call. We called numerous times. I left messages as well. I even spoke to the operator who could not explain why the physician’s office would not answer their office phone or return calls. Lastly and unfortunately, I had a CT scan done at Ashe Memorial only because the order was sent there in error. The CT technician was wonderful. However, the hospital had no problem calling me when my insurance paid , but did not cover the entire amount of the scan. Priorities right??!! The hospital administration needs to take a look into the deep lack of customer/patient service."
