Reviews of Residence Inn by Marriott Norfolk Downtown
"Well-priced, and our room was large, with a small kitchen. But we did have some issues with the room. In general it could use some refurbishment, the closet door was sticky, the bathtub very slippery, the couch had stains, and the sink didn’t have a plunger for some reason. Staff were courteous, and there was a free breakfast. Coffee in our room also tasted expired."
"Room was a little dirty and one of the TVs didn't work. Pretty sure the remote was dead (didn't have a slot for batteries). Went to the pool and about 15 kids came in with 2 adults. The kids were diving from the hot tub to the pool and they were extremely loud. Another person complained and the staff spoke once then left. Nothing happened and the kids continued to go nuts. This was a very bad visit and it's only the first night. Not planning to return here."
"The hotel booked two rooms for our single reservation. Luckily it was quickly taken care of. We arrived to a very hot room that took more than 2 hours to cool down. A constant exhaust fan in the bathroom would pull all the cold air out of the room if the bathroom door was open. Most of our outlets and TV were not working. After trying to call the front desk for 10 minutes, I left a chat message for them in the app and emailed corporate. This was promptly fixed after they finally answered, but then we found out that the entire right side of the room had no power. Again this was promptly fixed. Our bed was extremely hard. My wife and I tossed and turned all night and woke up with horrible back and hip pain. It was bad enough that we went out and bought a foam mattress pad for the remainder of our stay. When looking in the cabinets, we found a snack-sized pepperoni stick that was black and still in the package with an expiration date of January 2022. This room had obviously not been thoroughly cleaned for a very long time. While we were chilling out in our room they had a crew painting our hotel room door without giving us any notification. The constantly running exhaust in the bathroom pulled the fumes directly into our room and gave us both headaches. I had to open the windows to the outside to vent the fumes and leave a towel under our door. Knowing we would be staying for 5 nights, the hotel didn't give us any extra trash bags or toilet paper and only one extra set of towels and washcloths. There were no forks in the kitchen, only spoons and knives. The breakfast we had our first morning wasn't that great. Watery eggs, extremely overcooked potatoes, and dry sausage. The breakfast was better the next day. If you stay here, do yourself a favor and ask for the West York Street side. If you stay on the West Brambleton side, you will be woken up by sirens and high-revving motorcycles all night. I will say, that even though we had so many issues with the hotel, the staff was always warm, welcoming, and eager to help. I think the problem may lie with management in not leading this great crew to success."
"The room we had was very nice, but there are a few issues that reduce the overall experience. First, there is no filtered drinking water available. One has to drink tap water, or buy plastic bottled water. When I asked at the desk I was told to buy water from their market. Every other Marriott I've been to has filtered water available, if only in the lobby. They actually had filtered water in the juice machine, but that was only accessible during breakfast hours, and they refused accessed to get water at other times. Second, the breakfast is too reliant on heavily sugared packaged items. There weren't even any "adult" oriented cereals. It would also help if they would extend breakfast hours on weekends (closes at 9:30). Also, as is typical at Marriott's, the TV remotes did not work well (some buttons simply did not function, which is a minor annoyance. Finally, the shower would randomly go from hot to icy cold."
