Reviews of Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park
"Outstanding representation of a gold mining camp in Virginia. Most people would not guess that there was gold in Virginia. Several buildings representing the various aspects of camp life in a mining camp. From Mess Hall to Bunk Room and assaying office, all phase of a gold mining camp are here. Great signage. Restrooms available. Plenty of parking. Great place for adults and children."
"What an exciting trip! The Gold Mining Camp Museum was an adventure to remember. I love exploring the history and present day with such fantastic dedication from the museum and its supporters. I would recommend this location to anyone passing by or looking to take a step into the past and mine for gold. I will be returning for more gold mining and adventures."
"Lots of new things in the park now. Soccer field, volleyball court, covered eating area, good size play ground. Handicap walkways and paved walkways to all area's."
"We attended a homeschool field trip here. The kids were fascinated! My son loved every minute of the trip. He found gold, which was the most important aspect for him. I bought a fossil bag for him to pan as well. He was extremely excited to find shark teeth, ammonite, snails, clams, Devil's toenails, pyrite and so much more. The tour through the Assay Office, Mess Hall, and the Bunk House was very educational. The kids were able to observe that the dollar bill from the 1930's was larger than today's dollar bill. The park ranger asked if there were any questions after telling and showing the kids about the museum. Hands flew up in all directions. Kids and parents alike had a large number of questions. This is a sign of a great program. We took a picnic lunch. The facilities lend themselves to picnicking. The moms were able to talk and eat while the kids ate while playing on the playground. The playground is on the larger size. Our 30 kids had more room than they needed. We live about 2 hours away. Even through the distance is great, we are already planning our next trip down."
"Our group enjoyed the family day event this fall. There was lots for kids to take part in..very affordable. Kudos to the girl scout troop&Johanna R...face paintings where great. The horse people and horse rides where a hit. Kids loved the k9 demo and epically getting to meet Justice! Thank you FPD&Goldvien FD. I hope the continue this event annually. Thanks Monroe park!"
