Holy Cross Abbey
About the Business
Holy Cross Abbey is a church and place of worship located at 901 Cool Spring Lane, Berryville, Virginia, United States. The monastery is a school of the Lord's service where Christ is formed in the hearts of the brothers, and where solitude and silence are embraced to cultivate wisdom. The institution offers generous hospitality to share peace and hope with fellow pilgrims. The Monastery Chapel is open to the public, but communion practices have been adjusted for health and safety reasons. Daily masses and offices are livestreamed for virtual participation. Guests can purchase items online from the monastery's website. Staying at the Retreat House allows guests to experience the monastic life of silence, solitude, and liturgy. The Gift Shop/Porter's Cottage is a popular stop for visitors, offering a variety of products. Local visitors are encouraged to support the Abbey by purchasing items directly from the Gift Shop. Financial support is crucial for the Abbey's operations, and individuals can contribute as one-time donors or become sustainers. The Cool Spring Natural Cemetery, managed by the monks, is a sacred space where visitors can honor the monks' tradition of worship, prayer, and hospitality.

"Spent a weekend silent retreat at this Abbey. What a phenomenal experience. I would strongly recommend if you're looking to disconnect with the hurried business of life to connect with the Lord, spending time with Him."
"Beautiful property. Fortunate to attend and participate in noonday sung prayers."
"This is a note to all men over the age of 18 that are discerning a vocation to the religious life. You read comments that uses words such as quiet, peaceful, beautiful and many other adjectives describing the Abbey. You owe it to yourself to check out the place to serve God."
"This is a nice place for a self directed retreat. Visit the website for information on how to reserve a room and the cost. When you arrive there is some basic information on the bulletin board in the inside lobby to get you checked in and in your room. To get to the Abbey Church you have to walk about 10 minutes up the road. Walk out of the retreat house and return up the road you took to get there. The small building on the right is the gift shop and past that further up the hill is the Abbey Church. There is a sign showing the way. There are lots of stairs to get to the Church. I did not see an elevator. There is elevator access in the retreat house. Meals are simple and you may want to bring a few snacks."
"+JMJ Heaven on Earth?! I think so! I love making Retreats! This Trappist run Retreat House is absolutely SUPERB!! The silence which permeated my soul with serenity, the nature beauty of the surrounding countryside, and the opportunity for quiet prayers and to join the Trappist community for early morning prayers and Holy Mass were soul repairing. Retreatants were required to keep silence which I greatly appreciated. However, at meal times (simple but delicious) the Guest House Master (at that time) would read faith-related excerpts from his selected book. Additionally, the Retreat House has a Chapel where Retreatants could visit for private prayer times. Just glancing back in my memory banks refreshes by entire spiritual being! Praise the Good God for such a Heavenly sanctuary!"
