About the Third Winchester Battlefield Park
The Third Winchester Battlefield Park, located at 541 Redbud Road in Winchester, Virginia, is a historical site and tourist attraction spread across over 600 acres of preserved land. This park commemorates the Third Battle of Winchester, which took place on September 19, 1864, and was the largest and most costly battle in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War. With more than 54,000 men engaged in the conflict and over 8,600 casualties, this fierce battle saw the Confederates eventually pushed back by Federal forces in a decisive attack.
Visitors to the park can explore over 6 miles of walking trails and discover more than 30 interpretive markers and monuments that provide insight into the events of that fateful day. The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation is responsible for the preservation and interpretation of this important historical site, and can be contacted for more information at PO Box 897, 9386 S. Congress St. in New Market, VA, by phone at 540-740-4545, or via email at info@svbf.net. Reviews of Third Winchester Battlefield Park
"We stayed at the Town Place Suites & my husband entered the park on his electric bike. He enjoyed about 5 miles of it."
"I walk and bike through the trails connecting Millbrook High School and Regency Lakes here a ton because it connects me to my grandmother. The trail is nice, my only complaint is that it is not great in the snowy winter or after rainy days, because it is not paved and therefore you have to wait for the snow to melt and the puddles to evaporate. I do not think that's a big concern for the rating though. I have heard the rest of the trails are pretty, but I have not seen them! Edit: I finally went through the rest of the trails, it's beautiful! Highly recommend crossing over the small bridge over the creek, cannot remember the name currently."
"Hats off to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation for preserving this hallowed ground. Instead of gas stations or strip malls, we have well maintained walking trails, interpretive signage, and beautiful views for all to enjoy. There is a parking lot at the trailhead across from the Winchester Battlefields Visitor Center. Please consider donating to the cause and helping to maintain Winchester’s historic heritage."
"Great bit of Civil War history! Great walking trails, but the paved trail over Redbud Run needs quite a bit of trimming. Otherwise the trails are in great shape! I think when I went must be the near perfect time to go as the wild flowers were in full bloom. I don't think I've ever seen that many wild flowers in one place. I put in 3 miles on my loop hike and there are lots of trails I didn't even touch. I also didn't go into the museum, which I'm saving for next time."
"This is a very clean park with several hiking trails and very dogfriendly. There are historic signs, monument, and a few cannons scattered around the park. Asides from that, there is not much to see. I didn't like the gravel trails, but some are grassy and a small section for pavement on the 2.66 mile trail loop closest to the visitor's center. It is nice to get away without having to go into the woods to walk the trail. With Covid, I didn't see anyone wearing masks. Whew! Because I forgot to bring one. Everyone was so friendly! Love the Winchester residents!! So refreshing to see friendly faces. I really enjoying my walk with my pups."
