"It is one of the best organizations that I have ever worked for. Mason is top in his class. Highly recommended for any remodeling project and a great mentor."
"We had a refrigerator from 1995 through the summer of 2023, and it ended up having an ice-maker leak, which contributed to rotting the floor beneath the appliance and also into our crawl space. The HomeMasons repair manager, John Gugumuck, went into the crawl space with me, showed me the damage and what needed to happen, from removing the old fridge and repairing the floor and mold contamination to having the new unit installed. There was a great deal of coordination involved. John and his team did outstanding work and it was extremely well done. Mason Hearn and HomeMasons shepherded us through the entire process and they have my highest recommendation. Excellent work with great integrity, experienced, professional, trustworthy people to work with. HomeMasons also did our kitchen redesign work back in 2005 and we remain extremely pleased with it -- creativity combined with professional people, a job well done and a pleasure to work with."
"I would greatly caution anyone from using HomeMasons. Starting in 11-2022 and running through 04-2023 we worked with HomeMasons to complete one project with two main pieces of work: 1. A trapdoor in our atrium for interior basement access. 2. Rough stairs for the aforementioned trapdoor. We chose HomeMasons as they has previously completed an interior trapdoor on a house and Richmond and were able to coordinate us seeing it. They assured us this was a place of expertise for them. The early stages of design and the planning process were seamless but as construction started, our initial 2-week estimate for work turned into 3 months of unending stress. This was a major pain point, and given the nature of the job as Time and Materials (T&M), this guaranteed that we were going to go well over the upper estimates they had provided us for the job ($11k-$16k), and resulted in me turning to another contractor to complete the project. I have a wide variety of other things I didn't like: - The work slowdown was caused by engineering failures that were negligent. It's clear that HomeMasons had not planned adequately for our project. Given the T&M that became our problem. Over 2 iterations of their ideas they had only delivered a non-functioning trapdoor and a sizable hole in my wallet. For anyone that's engineering-minded here were the big mistakes: 1. First, they installed a 1/2-inch piano hinge (absolutely tiny and affixed to the hardwood floor itself). To be clear the role of this hinge is to bear about 100 lbs of weight. It started failing on the first use and caused splitting in our hardwood. There is 0% chance this was ever going to work, and given their expertise they should have known that. 2. Then they recommended a larger gauge piano hinge. We had this hinge installed as well and after ~2 months of little use it is also failing. This was another bad idea as it is also not long enough and is screwed into subflooring. - Poor communication from the lead on my project I always had to call to get updates, find out timetables, figure out when work would be done, etc. I'm told this was because my lead was bad and 2 months in he was fired and replaced with Mason Hearn (the owner), but he was not better. I was not notified my project lead had been changed until of course I called to find it out several days after the change. - I have multiple instances of Mason/my lead misrepresenting things to me directly and refusing to take care of certain parts of the project. For example, they increased the scope of work and charged me an extra ~$400 for parts (and what would have likely been $1,000 for labor) that I was neither notified of nor agreed to. When I asked Mason to have these parts returned to get a credit back to my account, he told me they were required to address comments on the permit inspection. This was untrue, and I called the permit inspector to confirm that the comment was not a required change. - HomeMasons is a very expensive option. You will be paying $100/hr labor, $30/day travel per person, 130% of the parts cost (they charge you a 30% admin fee on parts). You will get an unintelligible invoice each week with payment due the next week. I was hoping to be provided receipts and timesheets. And as I've been describing above, they don't deliver quality results for that kind of price. - Honestly, if you've gotten this far, I hope it's enough to persuade you to contact at least a few other contractors. I found working with HomeMasons exceedingly painful and not something I'd recommend to anyone else. I still haven't mentioned the hours of work I put into finding a trapdoor latch and metal coating (products/services that they confidently declared to me did not exist), being misquoted what I owe over the phone, and generally being treated disrespectfully and dismissively whenever I expressed my concerns, but sadly I'm hitting the character limit on this review. I paid HomeMasons $14k for bad work and a contractor I like ~$2K to fix it. Learn from my mistake."
"We had a fantastic experience with Home Masons from start to finish! The first time I called to inquire about our project, Mason answered the phone (while most contractors took weeks to return a call) and spend at least 20 minutes answering my questions. Mason and his crew were professional, diligent, and respectful of our home and went above and beyond with their subs to make sure the job was done to perfection. The crew was also super helpful to me in discovering a pipe burst elsewhere on our property, which was above and beyond the job they were here for. The finished space looks spectacular and we couldn't be more pleased with the work Home Masons did. Lastly, the team finished ahead of schedule, which is almost unheard of! I can't recommend Home Masons highly enough, and we hope to have them back to do more projects for us in the future :)"
"I contracted with HomeMasons to repair some water damage from an undetected slow roof leak and some minor unrelated carpentry work. After removing some paneling and drywall it was apparent that the extent of the water damage was more extensive than either the original estimator or I anticipated. After consultation with Mason, a plan was approved and all repairs were done promptly, on budget and very professionally. The end result was at least as good as new and all repairs were done with a minimum of disruption. During the course of the repair work I had interactions with a total of four different employees from HomeMasons (owner, estimator, carpenter and office personnel). Each of these individuals was pleasant and extremely professional. There is no part of this repair that was less than outstanding. I will absolutely contact HomeMasons before undertaking any future remodeling or repairs."
