Garner Magnet High School

"Graduated from Garner High in 2008. A lot of memories in the four years spent here. Met some great teachers that still keep and contact with me til today. Life if what you make it but a good high school is a jump start for our futures. One good teacher is the difference between going to jail and going to college. Not every kid can be changed by a high school or teacher. Some learn lesions the hard way while others may take advice from life experience. Two of the greatest teachers I had were Darla Baker (Retired) and Jacob Stevens in the automotive department. Ms. D.Baker could teach math to a brick. A lot of times I would have to go over and over subjects in math. Especially when letters started appearing in the problems. Mr. J.Stevens taught myself and countless others kids a trade. As well helped with coaching High school football. To make a long story short, it is the people who make the high school. Great teachers make major differences in students lives."

"My daughter is only going to do this one year at Garner Magnet High School. I will give the school 2 stars because she started out with a TERRIBLE math teacher and after much uproar, this teacher who was ineffective for YEARS was removed and replaced with another teacher who has proven to be GREAT. However, the number of incidents at this school ranging from guns being brought onto campus to a "riot" at the 9th grade center has caused me to draw the comparison to East Side High. The total number of fights this school year is staggering. I would love to see GMHS suspension rates because it has to be one of the highest in Wake County. I know my kid will miss the friends she has made, but the overall environment does not lead me to believe my child is safe and learning."

"I like the school, guidance counselors have really been Amazing! However,I dread having to pick up my children, the lady that does attendance is always so rude and never is smiling. At first I always thought she was maybe having a bad day, but now I feel she needs to find a new job that doesn't involve being around people. She never fails at turning my smile upside down. At least for a few minutes!"

"My son is currently a freshman at GMHS and enjoys the school. The teachers are inspiring and are preparing him for college. It's been an easy transition for him with the ability to become involved and make good choices. The transportation is slightly annoying for the students between the 9th grade center and main campus, but my sons never been late for class. Once the new GMHS is built the transportation issue will be resolved."

"When I went to Garner, I had a high expectation for the staff and students. Maybe that was the problem. I can still remember the stupid things that teachers would say to children and I was very little prepared for college when I graduated. The students were not kept in line by the faculty and would do drugs, vandalize, and there was even a small bomb that was set off in one of my years there. There were some really amazing teachers who taught me a lot, but the good did not outweigh the bad."
