Reviews of Camp Bethel
"I'll start with the positives, our camper felt safe at Camp Bethel and felt that they truly cared about him. He had a good relationship with one of his counselors and got along with everyone in his group. He also indicated that the food was really good. Meal times and the social interactions around the family style meal were possibly his favorite part of camp. He said said there was always plenty of food and he admired the system they had in place to get everyone fed safely and efficiently, and quickly! He did say that he that the spiritual component of the camp was pretty watered down. It was fun but he didn't feel it really challenged him. He enjoyed the conversations with other campers and hearing what they believed and why as they discussed things together in their meetings but it lacked real depth. It was bad enough that he felt that it was a stretch to say that the camp was a Christian camp. Other campers expressed some agreement with that sentiment including one who mocked the "Christian" nature of the camp. As a parent, I thought the communication needed some work. The advance communication before camp, and communication about the end of camp procedures was pretty good but there was nothing in between. They did not post any pictures or updates during the week on social media or via email. I noticed that this did change some the following week. Perhaps they should consider a photo sharing service like SmugMug or Waldo. They could generate some revenue from this as well. From the camper perspective, one of my son's biggest complaints was the communication. He complained that no one seemed to know what was going on at times, and the counselors didn't communicate well with one another so plans and activities were frequently miscommunicated and the kids spent a lot of time waiting as things got sorted out. Another frustration we had as parents was that they did not compel him to try activities - everything was voluntary. We hoped that he would be challenged to be more adventurous and try new things, but they didn't push him at all in this way. When we picked him up, he admitted that he took the easy way out and since no one tried to challenge him to do new things, he simply didn't do them. If they had encouraged and pushed him a little, I think he would have stepped out of his comfort zone more. A final concern we had was about the cabin arrangements at the camp. We believe that it is good for Camp Bethel to welcome all types of kids into a Christian camp environment but we had concerns about some of the boundaries and potential safety issues as a result. The camp acknowledged to my son that they would allow the trans campers who were present to choose their own housing arrangements based on what made them comfortable. While he was there, all those campers resided with campers who matched their biological gender instead of their chosen gender identity. However, that seemed to be at the insistence of the parents of those campers and not the camp or the camper. The camp leadership did not seem concerned about how that would impact other campers or if it would make them uncomfortable to have a student of the opposite biological gender in their cabin. I believe that this accommodation is unwise and fails to take into account a number of safety concerns. The camp's current course of action would make it difficult to protect both sets of campers, and neglects to consider the concerns of everyone and prioritizes the views of a few campers. It also fails to take into account general teenage impulsiveness and serious ramifications of certain types of behavior in that environment. We recognize this is a complex and difficult issue for camps but their current approach is unsuitable in our opinion. In short, if you are looking for your old school type church camp, this probably isn't the camp for you. That being said, for the week that our camper was there, we felt that he was safe and well cared for, and after discussing everything that took place after he left, we are still grateful for the experience despite our concerns."
"What's not to love about Camp Bethel. I grew up here, worked here, and now bring MY family here year after year. The most beautiful place on Earth."
"I visited because of my son's week-long camp. The signage was good going into the camp and parking was easy as well. My son has been there for a week So he had a chance to truly review things. He has a food allergy and was pretty pleased with how the food was handled and tasted. He said the beds were not great, but he's used toa pretty thick, padded mattress. Also, he worked hard and slept well! He was a little disheartened- he couldn't keep his phone charged! He did have a solar powered back up battery, but had trouble finding sunlight. As a mom, I would've loved hearing from him, but knowing he was in the shade regularly made me feel good about his week. He was bothered by the shower situation- there were only 2 showers for the boys in his cabin. I feel like since he's used to the showers at home that he was probably surprised by this situation more than inconvenienced, but he mentioned that it was the hardest part to adjust to. I think that he's having a great week, learning a lot (thanks to our staff!), And is safe (also thanks to our support staff!). I think it's been an overall great experience!"
"Nice camping place especially for those who bring everything they need. Updates noticed were decking around a house and improved wifi coverage for meeting areas. Still needs updating in several areas including bathrooms and showers and needed kitchen appliances and other basic kitchen needs and updates for food prep."
"Very peaceful, tranquil setting. We attended as part of a retreat and enjoyed the location despite it's being "out of the way." Roanoke is within 30 minutes so not entirely inconvenient. Great place. Great staff."
