Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run

"This course was very nice but the front desk worker/ranger “John” ruined the experience of this nice course for me and my group. I came from out of town for vacation and had forgotten my clubs at home. John told me I had to rent clubs, and was very rude about it. However, I understood the policy, so I tried to ignore his attitude. In order to rent the clubs, I had to give my driver’s license in exchange. Our tee time was at 1:20 and the course play time is 4 hours and 12 minutes. John never told the group that the clubs were due back by 5:20. We finished the course around 5:30 and the club house was locked despite the website saying they were open until 6:30. The remaining workers told me I would have to come back the next day to get my driver’s license back. The next morning after my hour long drive, I was met by John at the front desk where he made sure to let me know that it was my fault that I had not picked up my license in time. If you don’t have to interact with John you will have a great time here."

"To preface, I know playing golf on a Saturday morning is busy and can be hectic. The course was fine and the play was enjoyable. However, the two men working the start box on Saturday morning were the prime example of how not to treat paying customers. Rude is an understatement. Two buddies and I played the cardinal course. Two of us had never been to this course and do not plan on coming back. The men at the starter box belittled my friends and I. Our tee time was at 9:27 and we picked up our cart at 9:10. One guy was using the restroom and a buddy and I were waiting for him. The two men rushed us and told us that we would not be able to play despite being 20 minutes early. Once we got our clubs and headed to no. 1, one of the men followed us and harassed us. When we finally arrived at the first tee box, a foursome had still not teed off. Again, course was fine but the customer service needs a refresher to say the least."

"Great staff. Decent price. The driving range could use some maintenance on the tee area and the golf course itself could be in a little better shape but overall it's a great course for the money."
