Reviews of Midnight Brewery
"Had a great time listening to True Tonic, featuring Elana Lisa and Rod Hyner. Very friendly staff, many happy customers, enjoying the brews and the music. And, oh yes, listening to Victor play their theme song he wrote."
"We discovered Midnight Brewery because of the search for somewhere else other than Hardywood because of the crowd and kids. We've been to Midnight twice now and we like it. I love that they have a light pilsner. Not everyone who loves beer, likes a stout, IPA or unfiltered. Also for non-beer they have another option. We also like the crowd of adults and not kids, and the live music, so much better than other brewries that we been to many times. We haven't tried the food trucks yet. I think we've found a new place!"
"Such a quaint spot with pretty delicious beer and awesome entertainment! I live about 30 minutes away but always worth making the drive! One of my favorite breweries in the area!"
"Midnight is a bit of a mixed bag to visit. It's a pleasantly homey vibe, and you get the sense that there are many loyal regulars here. However, at the same time one has to question the value proposition of what they're offering at the taproom, and there are times when the place gets rather overwhelmed by the events they host. Pros: -- Beer is generally pretty solid. Their IPAs are underrated in Richmond. They have a year-round, non-adjunct oatmeal stout (Midnight Granite), making them one of the only RVA breweries to offer this all year, although they sadly don't put it in cans. All in all, it feels somewhat like the lineup of an older craft brewery, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. -- Regular schedule of food trucks. Occasional musical acts. Small outdoor seating area/patio. Cons: -- When they have live music, the place can sometimes be filled to capacity and beyond. Was here recently on a 90-plus degree day with a band playing, and there wasn't a single place to sit available in the taproom, performance area, or patio. People were ordering food and then just standing around, unsure of where they could eat it. It certainly seemed like they might be over whatever the safe capacity was. When we received our food, we ended up taking it home with us because there was literally nowhere we could sit down for a moment to eat. -- The elephant in the room is the price of draft beer. There isn't a single beer on tap here being sold for less than $7.50 (before tax/tip), and half are $8.50 or above. That may be acceptable in this market for some beer styles, but these guys are selling light lager and kolsch for $7.50 every day of the week! I can only imagine that this is because of economic necessity, and I can sympathize, but if that's the best value the business can offer on its lighter beer styles, then my takeaway is that something is probably wrong on the business end here. Put another way: Heavily hyped RVA breweries like The Veil or Triple Crossing can get away with charging those kinds of prices for pours of their over-the-top IPAs, but those companies also have more affordable options on tap on any given day, beers you can get for $5 or $6. Midnight doesn't have a single "value" beer on the menu, meaning that when you buy two pints of basic beer, tip your bartender and realize you just spent $20, the sticker shock is real. -- Perhaps if the company just had a smaller serving size available, this wouldn't stand out so much, but they use shaker pints for pretty much everything. The overall effect is that it can often feel like a brewery taproom from 2010, but simultaneously charging per-oz prices that are higher than the likes of The Veil in 2023. Which is all to say: I genuinely like their beer, but it's hard to feel like you're getting a good deal on it."
"While I'm not a big beer drinker lol...I'm a HUGE beer drinker this is amazing stuff. Trea is the perfect example of the American dream. Create a great product, and grow and grow. He and his team keep it very community oriented. So yea, I'm a fan. The beer is amazing. Their Brown Ale is sensational. It's all really great. Go have a flight by a pint then you will be filling a growler to go. It's that good."
