Reviews of Lower Whiteoak Canyon Fee Station
"Due to cold weather, only several cars were in the parking lot when we arrived around 10:00am. The trails were a little slippery, but we were prepared with microspikes (for our shoes) and gaiters and ended doing the cedar run trail to fire road to white oak canyon trail loop. The sceneries were spectacular!"
"Since I've last been here, some 5 years, they have recently expanded the parking area to accommodate more cars. Just be careful where you park. They left these trees in the middle and I parked in front of them so when we were leaving, I forgot they were there, backed up into them, and ruined my bumper and tail light. Besides that, this is one of my favorite hikes in the Shenandoah. If you have a Shenandoah National Park pass, the cost for this place is included in your pass. We did it on a Wednesday, so it wasn't too busy, but there were a lot of cars. Most of the crowd stopped at the lower falls, so once we got up passed that, we didn't see as many people. We had originally planned just to hike to the upper falls and turn back, making our hike 6 miles, but when we got up there, we decided to just do the Cedar Run loop back, making our hike close to 9 miles (my Garmin tracked it as 8 miles). If you are fit for it, definitely do it, because there were more waterfalls and we met almost no one coming down. It was probably even more beautiful than the White Oak trail. Just be careful you are following the trail markers because at a couple points we almost took a wrong turn, once crossing a stream. All in all, would love to come back and do this trail in the Fall."
"I didn't think Virginia had waterfalls this nice. The water was chilly, but after the hike was very refreshing. Don't stop at the first tiny waterfall, better ones come later. Come early or late if you want to park for free in the public lot, come mid-morning if you want to pay the private lot $10 to park. At least on a Saturday during the summer this was the case. Lastly, you probably won't have cell phone service at the parking lot, but may have service farther up the trail. I wasn't planning to surf the web- I was trying to call the person we were meeting. Fortunately we all met up near the ranger station and it all worked out."
"The parking lot has a limited number of spaces, so if you are going on a busy weekend, you may find yourself without a spot. There was overflow parking for $10 available, but it may nit always be available. That having been said, the hike is worth it. Great for kids of all ages, but I would recommend 6+ if you are going in the water which could get quite cold depending on the day you are going. The hike to the waterfall is short (less than an hour). Don't weigh yourself down bringing lots of things with you. I would say footwear is a must since the rocks in the water are quite unstable and slippery."
"Beautiful hiking trail which follows the Robinson River for the majority of the way. There are some nice swimming holes and in my opinion is an easy hike. It does get crowed and parking is limited without having to pay. Over flow parking is $10 so bring cash! I also recommend bring water shoes I did not see any trash/glass in the water but you can never be sure."
