Reviews of Okaeri Japanese Cafe
"Tried the strawberry souffle pancakes. They were good. You have to get your own food. The restaurant space is very small. I came on a random Thursday night, around 5, so it was pretty empty. But got progressively more busy as I was waiting for my order. You'll be listening to people's conversations, that's how close the tables are. Suggest calling ahead if you want something specific on the menu. They do sell out of things."
"Max of all were out of stock and we tried chocolate banana pancakes and they were so good. Best ever pancakes i have ever had. So fluffy so soft"
"The most important thing that you need to know about this Cafe is that Japanese people run it! If you're familiar with Japanese culture, you already know you need to try this place! Nova isn't California or New York, and authentic Japanese places are hard to come by. This has some drawbacks as most onigiri are "sold out" most of the time. There's a lot of demand and as I'd expect from a Japanese-run business, they put a limit on how much quality onigiri they can make a day. This is the reason why you'll find most onigri in "sold out" state. Other restaurants will try to cut corners and meet the demand and ruin the taste. Even if the "sold out" thing is annoying, I respect the focus on quality. The staff is super nice and respectful. There are two big-screen kiosks for you to place the order in the store. If you want to try curry dishes, drinks, and coffee, it shouldn't be a problem. If you want onigiri though, I recommend trying during non-rush hours or as soon as they open. If you go there any other time, good luck! The place is quite small as it could only fit may maybe 20 people at most without feeling super crowded. Bottom line, if you want onigri, place a takeout order online and pick it up. If you're going for other stuff, you might get a seat during non-rush hours. The spicy tuna I had was out of this world. It was made fresh and kept warm. I've had onigiri from Korean groceries. Okaeri's onigris take you straight to JAPAN! The beef curry I had was quite okay. The flavor profile is a bit one-dimensional toward curry taste and not very balanced but that's how curries are. Maybe that's just me. I'd be going back for more onigri and drinks! I love this place!"
"Amazing ambiance to enjoy with your friend or date. The waffle pancakes are definitely worth trying. They also have delicious onigiri and their cakes look so good. I can't wait to try their matcha tea/latte"
"I tried their soufflé pancake. I was expecting it to be light and fluffy. It tasted good the first few bites but it becomes to sweet. But luckily there was the bitterness of the Matcha Powder to balance out the sweetness. The Onigiri tasted so good. I highly recommend trying their salmon filling. Just a note that it takes about 15-20 mins to cook your soufflé pancakes. The vibes in there made me feel like being inside a cafe in Japan (especially if you don’t face the windows!) overall everything tasted pretty good, I would come again and try other items on their menu!"
