Reviews of Contento
"Arrived when the restaurant opened on a Saturday and was informed they were fairly booked up inside and that the bar was full starting at 6pm, so we opted to sit outside. They place blankets over their outdoor chairs, which is a nice comfort. We ordered and received our appetizers in a timely manner and were pleased but not wowed. At around the half hour mark we were finishing up the last bite of our appetizers as another party was seated next to us in the then entirely empty outdoor seating section. I understand New York restaurants and being busy so assumed this was because the place would soon be packed, not a big deal. We then waited a little over half an hour without seeing our waiter for our entrees. We watched the table that had been seated next to us receive their entrees (I believe without receiving their appetizers) and then we finally received only one of the two entrees we were expecting. Once we had finished with our entree the waiter checked in to see how we were doing and we inquired about the other entree and we discovered it had somehow gotten lost in translation. Not great and after already having been at the restaurant for an hour we weren't going to wait any longer for another entree so we requested the check. We were given the check for the table next to ours, which got sorted out just fine. For these errors they were kind enough to remove the 8 dollar beverage one of us ordered. Our server did a good job of making sure we had water. I was willing to chalk it up to an off night or a fluke, but looking inside the restaurant when we left at 6:30 the bar was still more than half empty and no one else had come in to the outdoor seating area, which really made us wonder why they seated two tables on top of each other and why our food took such a long time. One or two errors you can count as a fluke, the surprising number of service related errors we experienced was indicative of some bigger issue. As for the food: We had: scallop ceviche (needed more acid) and the chicories (would have liked more sauce) the duck leg, which was cooked well but the rice was bland and the sauce was delicious but they give you about a teaspoon of it. The pickled onions were nice as well and they thankfully weren't as lacking. In general, the elements of flavor that are strongest they're very reserved with. It's not quite fine dining but they certainly charges like it."
"One my top spots in Manhattan… and it is uptown in East Harlem near my work. Upscale atmosphere, but not stuffy like many in the Upper East Side. Attentive service and phenomenal food. The ceviche and duck leg are my favorite dishes, although all are worth a try. The staff are knowledgeable about the menu and wine to help recommend if needed. What stands out though and actually rare, is their bartenders Katie and Allison who have created unique drinks that go beyond the bar standards. They are excited to talk about and explain the drink giving you an educational experience on top of a great tasting cocktail. I know for many it might be out of the way or off the beaten path of most visiting NYC, but I highly recommend! They are doing some amazing things here!"
"The food and drinks are great with a twist to traditional Peruvian cuisines. My only complaint was the reservation process. They stated that nothing was available inside at the requested slot (6pm) so we had to show up earlier (5:30pm). We did but the restaurant was empty for 2 full hours, inside and outside seating. That was a bit odd. Besides that, the food and service was fantastic! Vicente was very knowledgeable of the menu, highly recommend any of his recommendations."
"Fantastic bourbon list and Allison made a perfect old fashioned. And the food! Flavors and textures so well balanced--try the sunchokes and the pastel. The staff was so welcoming to a solo female traveler! 5 stars."
"Delicious dinner at Contento. It was the perfect start to a night out. A little pricey for the portion size but I did enjoy all the dishes. We got the ceviche, crab noodles, and short rib to split. Recommend trying the drinks!"
