"20 years of symptoms with no explanation led me here. I had high hopes for UPMC, however, without even waiting for test results to come back, I was given the diagnosis of fibromyalgia--a diagnosis that is meant to be reserved for when everything else is ruled out. This was my first time seeing a rheumatologist, so I was hoping for some actual tests. She ordered some to appease me but already declared that they would come back negative. My symptoms clearly point to more than fibromyalgia, given that I have none of the tender points (she only tested for a couple) and that I get fevers--pointing to systemic inflammation. Also the chest pain (costochrondritis) clearly points to spondylitis more so than fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia does not cause inflammation, although it can make the pain feel worse. I had no energy to argue much with you, Dr. Co. I could see that your mind was made up already. When reviewing my history, you saw that I was on anti-anxiety meds. Therefore, in your mind, all my symptoms must be caused by my mental state and not vice versa. Or perhaps they are two separate conditions altogether! Imagine that! I'm beginning to learn that this is very typical of many doctors, and it is a shame. It's the easy diagnosis. You completely dismissed my 20 years of personal experience. And telling me to focus on low impact exercise after I told you I'm a competitive runner! High effort exercise makes me feel better, not worse as in chronic fatigue--which you also mentioned I may have. Then you suggest that I get on anti-depressants. The only thing depressing me right now is you. This appointment was a joke and I will be looking elsewhere for a doctor. Please, if anyone out there knows of a good rheumatologist let me know."
