About Us

The Transition Center, located at 2 Lower College Road in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, is dedicated to studying the science of human development and family relationships. As a major in Human Development and Family Science (HDF) at the University of Rhode Island (URI), students explore how individuals grow and change over time, and how family dynamics impact this process. Students in the HDF program engage in fieldwork experiences in various human service settings, preparing them for careers focused on promoting healthy development across the lifespan.
One key program offered by the Transition Center is early intervention, which provides support to families with children aged birth to 3 who may be experiencing developmental delays. HDF majors at URI have the opportunity to participate in experiential education opportunities, including service learning and internships in human service settings. Students also have the chance to work alongside faculty on research projects in various areas of human development and family science.
The Transition Center provides hands-on experience working with children, adolescents, older adults, and families through on-site clinics such as the URI Child Development Centers and the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic. The HDF major is also a great complement to other disciplines at URI, offering students a well-rounded education in human development and family science.
For more information about the Transition Center and the HDF program at URI, contact [email protected] or call 401-874-2150. URI is an equal opportunity employer committed to affirmative action principles.
