Reviews of Barry Lessin, M.Ed., CAADC
"Over the many years I’ve known Barry as a professional and colleague, it is clear that he has a true passion for helping families affected by drug addiction. His treatment approach of harm reduction is cutting edge and grounded in sound research. Over the years Barry has developed a network and array of resources-addiction psychiatrists, other mental health and substance abuse professionals, intensive inpatient treatment when necessary, support groups, sources of education. Through referral and coordination with these professionals he has developed a team approach to treating the complex, multifaceted and often devastating problem of addiction. Barry’s resources and network allow him to assess and respond to urgent situations quickly and effectively. This is crucial, even life saving. Barry’s genuine understanding of the needs of both the person with problems using drugs as well as family and friends who care about them is extremely helpful. Barry’s passion for working with families impacted by substance use is also reflected by his grassroots efforts as a public health advocate to eradicate the stigma associated with drug use and to educate and empower families to be able to more easily access person-centric care and support for those in need. I’ve referred many people to him for his services; in fact, I’ve consulted him when addiction became a problem in my own family. That is the best endorsement of all."
"Barry Lessin is a skilled, compassionate, and successful psychologist who deals with complex issues in a realistic manner. People who use substances in a harmful way need those qualities in a psychotherapist. I've known Barry for several years now and he has taught me a great deal about Harm Reduction, psychology, and life! As an advocate to repair the destruction caused by The War on Drugs, Barry has dedicated much time and energy to right the wrongs that exist in failed drug policies. Harm Reduction teaches meeting people where they are at when they seek assistance to change their behavior. Barry goes beyond that. He provides the safe environment for people to understand their need to use substances--and to mitigate the harm these substances may be doing. He accepts the fact that people may use while in treatment and seeks to stabilize them psychologically. The goal is to be functional and not miserable. Barry is the therapist who can help people attain those important life goals."
"I recommend Barry Lessin without reservation. I had the pleasure of working with Barry for many years and have continued to follow his practice as a psychologist and his passionate advocacy for his clients and their families over the years. He has been instrumental in making the case for compassionate and effective public policy to address the needs and best interests of those negatively impacted by substance use, and has been a catalyst for families organizing networks of support and self-advocacy. He is not only a thoughtful, well-informed professional, but a warm, genuine, down-to-earth practitioner who easily earns the trust of his clients and families. Over the years, he has assisted countless individuals and families work through their struggles to healthier lives, always keeping in mind their unique goals with sensitivity and without judgement. I have been especially impressed with his passion for and effectiveness with teens and young adults and their families. Though I had several colleagues that I could reach out to, Barry was my “go to” when I had concerns about substance use in my own family."
"I've known Barry Lessin many years professionally and worked with him collaboratively with families and loved ones struggling with drug and alcohol issues. Barry works from a harm reduction perspective when folks are unsure of whether they are ready to stop using drugs or alcohol and he works equally well with family members and individuals who are choosing to be entirely abstinent. Barry is particularly informed by the CRAFT approach, Community Reinforcement and Family Training, which is an empirically based behavioral method shown to be effective in helping family members achieve success. For the past few years Bary has been so busy with advocacy work he has been unable to take many clients but he is now rededicating his efforts towards private practice and more available to take on new clients and families. What stands out about Barry Lessin is his person-centered and caring approach which might seem to be an obvious necessity among psychologists and addiction counselors but all too often therapists are too formulaic and stuck in certain philosophical or theoretical frameworks and Barry is a therapist who naturally understands and appreciates the importance of a collaborative and client centered treatment experience. He deserves a five star review. Jeremy Frank PhD CADC, Clinical Psychologist and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor at Jeremy Frank Associates in Bala Cynwyd and Philadelphia."
"Barry Lessin is a professional colleague to whom I have confidently referred any client or family who has struggled with a substance use and/or mood related concerns. He has proved himself to be a valuable and trusted asset within his community. More specifically, he is compassionate, incredibly knowledgeable, and has 40 years of experience treating families and young adults where substance use has become an obstacle in their lives. I know of no other provider in the Philadelphia region who can bring the unparalleled level of experience that Barry Lessin offers his clients. Thus, without reservation, I highly recommend him to you!"
