"The last time I saw Dr. Lear was in 2021. I have since found another gyno in the Ebensburg area who is part of the UPMC network. I went to Dr. Lear because my mom was treated by him and he caught her reproductive cancer early on. I am so thankful to him for that. Sadly, I did not have a great experience. I have PCOS and I didn't get an official diagnosis until 18 years old. During my teen years, I gained a lot of weight, but my pediatrician didn't think much of it. I also had thyroid issues as a child. In my 20s, I decided I wanted to take care of my health and get ahead of this. Dr. Lear was dismissive, arrogant, and rude. I can recall at my 2020 exam when he pointed out my weight gain and humiliated me for it. I knew I was overweight and my mental health was absolute garbage. I was suicidally depressed on top of everything else, a full time college student, a caregiver, and I worked 3 part time jobs. I was barely holding on. When conducting my exam, he lectured me on my weight, then pointed out my hirsutism (facial hair) and insisted I try electrolysis to "reduce the male pattern hair growth." He then informed me about my quality of life if I remained this weight and insisted I join Weight Watchers as he walked out the door. I remember crying as I got dressed and made my yearly follow up. I returned in 2021 for a gyno exam and he was more polite, but honestly at that point I lost all respect and trust in being in his care. He also doesn't like you asking him questions and seems irritable when you do. My advice to women with PCOS - consider the UPMC network if you can. There are locations in Greensburg, Monroeville, and Ebensburg. Find doctors that are up-to-date with women's care - especially for women with PCOS or other fertility and endocrinology disorders. So many women in rural areas like Indiana County are being under treated. Bedside table manner matters just as much as the degree and license on a doctor's wall. My gyno now is a breath of fresh air. She listens, she's patient, she made recommendations to an endocrinologist and a dietitian, and I have gotten my diabetes under control, I've lost 30 lbs in 6 months, and I have a regular cycle monthly. When something is off - she immediately has her staff (or sometimes herself) call me back to order labs or do a telehealth call. Don't settle for subpar care."
"It has taken me over two weeks to finally get the courage to say how traumatic my experience was with going to Dr Lear. I am a 26 year old with PCOS. My fiancé and I have been trying to get pregnant for over 2 years with no luck. I went to Dr. Lear for a second opinion on getting fertility medication (I am considered obese and wanted to see if he was able to help me get fertility medication while on my weight loss journey) now, I fully understand the risks with getting pregnant while being overweight. I am not opposed to losing weight first and then getting fertility help. But the second Dr.Lear walked into the room he proceeded to tell me that “no one teaches women how their bodies work, so I’m going to explain to you how the menstrual cycle works” he drew me up a photo and told me that “god designed you this way” meaning he meant for people to not be overweight. If you’re overweight, God makes it so that you don’t ovulate correctly. He did not mention a single thing about PCOS. And when I told him again that I have PCOS, which causes the lack of ovulation and also causes women to have issues with weight management he completely dismissed me and proceeded to tell me again that god wants me smaller. In order to get pregnant and told me to lose 120lbs. He would not even consider helping me if I didn’t lose 120lbs. Which is crazy to me because I’m only 260lbs. He also went on to tell me that he had just lost over 100lbs himself. And that it’s really “not that hard” again disregarding the fact that k have PCOS and it makes it harder to lose weight. I will HIGHLY not recommend seeing this dr!! I left in tears and am still trying to understand how this man is allowed to work as a dr. Very unprofessional!"
"Dr. Lear and hus staff have been with my family and me for over 30 years. In those 30 plus years, he has helped me with all of the following: birth control, endometriosis - he did all of my laser surgeries - infertility, the prenatal care and birthing of my 3 children, the miscarriages of the 2 that my husband and I lost, he did the circumcisions of all my boys right in the hospital, treated me through a breast cancer scare, performed my hysterectomy, and is now helping me through menopause. He and his staff have always been friendly, timely (even returning phone calls), and beyond courteous. Dr Lear has been able to answer every single question my husband and I ever had, as well as provide resources for those questions, in every single circumstance. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone who has an OB/GYN need."
"Today was my first visit with Dr. Lear and his office. I’ve had unpleasant experiences with my previous OB office so of course tensions were high and my anxiety was through the roof. I’ll start off by saying the atmosphere of his office in general was so comforting and welcoming. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant and friendly. Cheryl (forgive me if I’ve misspelled her name), was amazing. I don't think I would have made it through my procedure without her. It really felt as if she was someone I knew for years. She made me feel so comfortable and helped calm me down. She really makes the whole office. Dr. Lear was amazing. He talked me through the whole thing, kept making sure I was doing okay and I was comfortable. Offered to stop multiple times, listened and answered my questions. If you’re looking for an OB, especially if you have bad anxiety with these types of appointments, this is the place to go!! I’m so relieved to know I finally found a great OB."
