Orchard Hall at Chatham University's Eden Hall Campus is a sustainable residence hall that houses 60 students in single rooms. Located on 388 acres of rolling woodlands and fields in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, Eden Hall is the world's first university campus designed to showcase sustainable solutions. The residence hall is part of Eden Hall's commitment to modeling sustainable approaches to energy, water, food and agriculture, air quality and climate, and the interaction of natural and built systems.
Nestled in the heart of the campus, Orchard Hall offers students a unique living experience that aligns with the values of sustainability and environmental education. "Chatham University's Eden Hall Campus is a place where Pittsburgh's past meets the best possibilities for our region’s present and future. This campus is a living learning lab, with the use of old historic buildings and new more energy efficient ones, research is being done in the woodland, and in the actively gardened fields and hoop houses, while students are learning to use and be better stewards of the land. The campus is the perfect setting for the students studying the complexities of sustainability to get the experiential learning in systems thinking, leadership, transition management, and stakeholder engagement that the Eden Hall faculty provides with its many community partners, who give the students the opportunity to develop and implement iterations of solutions. Local residents use the many walking paths and trials on campus, and even stop in the campus café to eat, where much of the produce the students grew is cooked and served. Having worked eight years between my under graduate degree and entering the MBA/MSUS program here, I can say I definitely made the right choice for my education and future career goals in working across sectors to address community needs and work towards a more just and sustainable future."
