"I am sure the school itself is top class but they are not traffic regulators and should stop pretending to be. The way the city operates during both the arrival and dismissal of this school is extremely impractical. I don't have a child that attends this school, so why should I sit for 25 minutes on a public road during dismissal? This is not the admin, teachers, or boards problem. York City: figure out how to do this without shutting down half of the most traveled part of the city."
"I enrolled my 2nd and 5th grade daughters into this school. We only lasted 2 months before I had to abruptly remove them. The principal and teachers are unresponsive, unsupportive and very dismissive to students and parents of color. There is constant bullying from students and teachers with poor classroom management. Also, the principal fails to respond to emails in a timely manner. The whole experience was a nightmare. Don't fall for their diverse facade. It is just for show. They are outright discrimatory to black and brown kids and their families."
"I went to York Academy from 1st to the end of 9th, so 9 whole years of my life. Earlier on, when the school was first made and when I first joined, things were good. The education was demanding yet well balanced, and people were overall kind. However, as the years went on, I found that things began to get worse and worse. Teachers began caring less and giving more punishments for petty rule breakings, and the workload began to pile up. This is just a part of going to higher grades, yes, but I do not think that students should have a work load of 7 classes, almost each and every one having a daily assignment, and projects made weekly. Besides the obscene workload, this school is an IB school, meaning that all work is more difficult but for a better diploma. Again, this is fine, but a recent rule instated (which was the snapping point for me wanting to leave) was that ALL students must go for an IB diploma, and ALL classes must be for an IB diploma. Normal IB schools do not require an IB diploma, and if you do want one then you only need to take 2 IB level classes. The fact that the normal workload, the grades before the IB level difficulty are already causing over half of the grade to fail, is just disappointing. For this year, under half of the maximum amount of 10th graders passed, meaning that less than 35 students passed. Keeping in mind that these are the "easier" classes, the ones that are not IB, I really am scared for my friends' education and grades as the years go on. Other than that, staff are fairly rude, communication between staff, students, and parents is terrible (to the point where a friend of mine got threatened with a knife, the attacker got expelled, and the victim's mother never found out), and new rules are enlisted and removed nonstop making for a confusing and stress inducing experience. Tl;Dr: After 9 years of experience, I can confidently say that the work load is much too large for the average student, and that the staff, communication, and petty rule making is way too much to be a good high school experience, and has honestly broken my work ethic and the mental stability of friends and people around me. If I could give a negative star rating, I would. Update as of November 30th, 2021: I still follow the school rather closely, though I am now at Dallastown School District. Some amends have been made, such as the school offering normal classes and not just IB, however the mental toll on students has gotten to the point of 12th grade (senior year) only having 11 kids in the program. After interviewing 4 of them, each said they are stuck there because they are not allowed to switch schools due to thier parents. When asked, they also said they would switch schools in a heartbeat if they had the chance. The school has tried to establish that this is a good thing by saying that a small community makes it easier to focus on individuals, but focusing on individuals shouldn't be difficult in the first place. Part of having a school means you want to teach everyone, including people who are not academically gifted. So if your child is gifted in school, then sure, send them here, but it is much less than the normal high school experience, and takes a higher toll on their mental health."
"My kids have been going here for 3 years and even though the virus has us on virtual learning they made the transition easy and not many issues. The teachers have been wonderful and understanding and been doing a great job. I Love this school"
