"Constructed as part of the complex that comprised the US Naval Amphibious Training Base, the Former Pump House and adjacent water tank represent a critical piece of local history for the Dowell peninsula as well as the US Navy more widely. Located near the Former Commodore’s House, the Former Pump House and the several deep water wells that were drilled nearby, were responsible for providing an average of 960,000 gallons of water that were consumed every 24 hours on the base. These efforts, combined with the 150 million gallon water tank located next to the pump house, caused several shallower wells in Solomons, much to the locals dismay. One of the main criticisms of the pump house is that visitors are unable to enter the pump house or view anything more than the historic structures themselves. However, this gives rise to one of the most enticing features of the site: with no tickets required to view the Former Pump House, guests are able to stay as long as they like an approach the building as close as they want with almost no interruption and crowds of other visitors. For me, this serves perfectly as a milestone as part of an afternoon walk, or as a fun local landmark to show visitors to the area. I would recommend that those without a specific interest in the history of the local area, or a particular interest in the role that the US Navy played in World War 2 are aware of the minimal nature of the site. Comparable to roadside historical markers, there is little at the site to entertain visitors and families beyond viewing the structures themselves."
