Reviews of UPMC Vision Institute
"If you have an option, choose somewhere else. Unfortunately I have UPMC insurance and can only go to UPMC unless I want to triple my costs. I have 3 year old twins who both have had glasses since before they turned 1. While the UPMC optical shops are a fine experience, the ophthalmology offices are a giant mess. Every single appointment (literally EVERY one) has been rescheduled by the doctor/office at least once, sometimes twice or three times. The doctors don't listen well and insist on seeing the kids more than once a year even though insurance won't pay for it, which I have brought up more than once. I understand that maybe they need to be seen more frequently, but with the constant rescheduling, half the time it ends up being way longer between appointments than is usually requested anyway. I work in an outpatient office whose physicians also round in the hospital, so I understand that sometimes stuff happens and you need to reschedule patients, but EVERY time? Unacceptable. Start holding your physicians accountable and making them set a schedule and stick to it."
"It’s a shame that people only write reviews when they had a bad experience. I had read the reviews before my daughters appointment and was incredibly anxious because of them. However, I have only good things to say about this place! We only had to wait a couple minutes before my 8 month old and I were taken to an exam room. The staff were all very friendly and professional. Dr. Gagrani was amazing with my daughter. She was incredibly patient and kind during her eye exam even though my baby was crying. She explained things to me clearly and made sure I understood everything before we left."
"The people that work here are unbelievably unprofessional. Getting ahold of anyone on the phone is impossible. After waiting 8 months just for an eye appointment, the “doctor” told us to have him wear a patch for the next 4 months. Meanwhile… WE TRIED THAT A YEAR AGO AND IT DIDN’T WORK! They’re literally putting off scheduling surgery for him because they’re lazy and don’t want to deal with it. This is the last time we go here. Calling and scheduling with a different office today. Don’t go here they don’t care about your kids."
"After waiting over an 1.5 hr the ophthalmologist spent less then 17 minutes with my son. The aid was incredibly rude. We were placed in a room with a tv and when asked if she could turn on something for my 5 year old while he continued to wait she carelessly put anything on, then said there was no volume when there was clearly speakers on top of the tv. When questioned about the speakers and why they would be there if there was no volume she appeared annoyed, turn it on then stormed out of the room. I feel like if this practice is going to have individuals who fall in the pediatric category wait hours to be seen then they should either provide some sort of entertainment or encourage parents to bring something to entertain their children while they wait. After the ophthalmologist looked into my sons eyes he had my son look at a few words on a card. He wanted my son to tell him if he felt the words on the card were better with or without his glasses and when my son continued to say both ways were good the ophthalmologist annoyed decided for my son that he could see better with the glasses. I feel like after having to wait so long my son should have been treated with more patience. My child did not understand the concept of better or worse when it came to what the doctor asked. He was communicating that he could see both ways. The practice needs materials that will help all individuals within the age group of their patients. As an example provide level one reader word cards then ask the patient to read with then without their glasses. This doctor did nothing and continued on. I explained that I felt my sons eyes have gotten worse with the glasses, ophthalmologist disagreed and quickly moved on to say he felt his eye were fine despite the fact the eye still wandered. I asked the doctor what other options there was to correct my sons eye and he reluctantly said one option would be surgery. I let him know I was considering a procedure to correct my sons eye and he curtly responded by saying he would have the surgeons call me and that it may take a few months for the call. I explained to him that my stepdad had a similar issue as a child and now his eye is permanently out of place, the doctor told me that my son could also wait to have the surgery when he is older if that were to happen with him. He didn’t explain the procedure, risks, why he thinks it’s not a good option literally NOTHING. I honestly feel it was a waist of time going there, My sons eye still wanders. We sat there for so long and the ophthalmologist spent very little time with my son. The Ophthalmologist did not offer anything I could do to help my child. We will not be returning to this location or receiving services from this provider, Luchansky in the future."
"I like to give the benefit of the doubt, but when we run into the same issues over and over, I lose my patience. On several occasions, we have waited for over an hour for my 4 yr old son to be seen by the eye doctor. EVERY time I get a bill, and EVERY time I have to call and re-explain that we have vision insurance and my major medical should not be billed!! If you don't have UMPC insurance they don't seem to understand how to bill. It's frustrating, and a waste of their time and mine. I'm actively looking for a new place to take my son."
