Reviews of UPMC Headache Center
"Years ago, I suffered from migraines and saw Dr. Kaniecki, who swiftly got them under control. Now, years later, after being in a serious car accident, the migraines came back. I was put in with Megan Trenz. It was a complete waste of a two month wait and an hour of my time. Easily one of the worst doctors I've ever seen, who offered me absolutely no help whatsoever, and was insulting on top of it. I was told to "see a psychologist" because I seemed "depressed and anxious." She was insistent that anxiety was causing my migraines. Yes, I do suffer from anxiety on occasion, but certainly not chronically or to the point of needing to see someone. I've been with doctors for ten years who actually know me as a patient and have never suggested I needed to see a psychologist. She sees me once and starts attributing my problems to anxiety. However, that wasn't the worst or the insulting part. I also told her when I went in there that I was not myself and was acting both depressed and anxious because my best friend just died. I was clear that it was very unexpected, and so recent that I had helped plan the funeral the day before my appointment, and the funeral was the day after the appointment. I told her I was aware I was acting all over the place because I was grieving and wasn't thinking straight, and this was not my normal behavior. This also doesn't explain my six months of migraines. All she offered me was a psychology referral - no medication, no help, nothing. She should not be allowed to see patients. She also tried to tell me that she felt that the pain I was having on my left side was also being caused by anxiety. I would love for her to tell that to the sports medicine doctor who is currently evaluating me for surgery on my back and left shoulder. Again, I was in a very bad car accident with the impact directly to my drivers side. Anxiety is not causing my issues. The impact from the car accident is. I'm really disgusted by the way I was treated by her and her lack of help and listening skills. Do not recommend to my worst enemy. If you need to go here, insist on waiting for an appointment with Dr. Kaniecki. Update: After thinking on this experience, I decided to contact the office regarding it. The office manager was not going to be in until the following Monday, so I left a message letting her know not once, but twice, that I would not be available until after noon on that day, and please not to call me back until then. She called me back at 9:58 am. It seems this entire office has one big problem with listening. Don't waste your time here. Find yourself some better help. You deserve it."
"I have now seen three neurologists at the headache center. One about 7 years ago who diagnosed me with episodic migraine but gave me no indication on how to move forward. She prescribed 50mg Sumatriptan and sent me on my way. Fast forward a few years and headaches increase. March 2022 I was still in episodic but borderline chronic migraine. I started seeing Dr. Stakic and he recommended acupuncture and nortiptyline. I stayed on that for about six months. Migraine severity got better but frequency increase. My medication was switched to propanolol and I was so tired I could barely function. Everything I asked about concerning cause was met with "probably not" but there were no indications as to causes or things I could do to alleviate pain. I was told by another practitioner by a PA at a fitness studio that I attend and UPMC would not let me see him. They reluctantly offered me a PA and told me they typically don't allow someone to switch providers. What happened to second opinions? I started seeing Dr. Schaeffer in Jan 2023 and the first appointment seemed promising. Prozac was offered and I began taking that Jan 2023. Headache frequency increased to near daily mild to moderate migraine. Not debilitating but life was/is miserable. In the mean time I had asked for a few things: 1) Imaging of my neck. Multiple xrays show military neck. I have zero curve in my cervical spine which could be compressing my nerves in the C2-C3 region. I wanted further imaging to see if this could be the or at least a cause. She told me no because surgery wouldnt be warranted. 2) Blood testing for things like serotonin and histamine. She also told me no on this. I understand that plasma levels are not a true representation of levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, but a blood test could at least indicate if I am low in serotonin or high in histamine. 3) Gammacore neuromodulation device. I was told no on this because she wasnt familiar with the device or the research (I have done a TON of research on this reading peer reviewed literature as well as discussions on it from the World Migraine Summit). Finally, mid April we had an appointment and we stopped the Prozac. During this appointment there were these issues: 1) She admitted that she did not want to order imaging because SHE would not know how to interpret it and she would have to refer me out. She agreed during the appointment to order imaging due to the fact that I also have numbness and tingling in my arm and she would just refer me to someone else for that. 2) Still no movement on blood tests (so I went elsewhere to functional medicine to get pointed in the right direction). 3) After I told her via email that other doctors in the center were approved gammacore prescribers, she finally agreed to fill out the script for me. I had already on my own found TruVaga which is electrocore's original model of the gammacore that does not require a prescription so I didn't need the prescription anymore. And yes it has been helping. 4) She was supposed to get the Anti-CGRP meds approved and I was told I would hear back most likely within the week but possibly two weeks. That was on 4/13/23. It is now 5/8/23 and I still havent heard anything. After this, my functional doctor recommended pharmacogenetic testing and to see if my neurologist would order it for two reasons. 1) to help treat me with the best medication 2) insurance coverage. On 4/21 Dr. Schaeffer ORIGINALLY told me that she did not feel comfortable ordering a test that someone else would interpret. I responded informing her that it was a misunderstanding and that she would be the one interpreting, it was just recommended by my functional medicine doctor. Today on 5/8 she FINALLY responded now saying that she wouldn't order because she is not familiar with them. So instead of taking time to educate herself on these matters, a patient is left hanging and trying to figure things out on her own. A pill for an ill is all they've got for us, no answers or real help in healing."
"I have been seeing Dr. Kaniecki fir several years for complicated migraines. I have a lot of medical issues along with a long array of medicine. He is still able to work with all of those factors to give me great migraine relief. When I do have a rebound, him and Amy find a treatment plan and I find relief. I have recommended him to so many people and will always continue to."
"Dr. Knepper is absolutely amazing! Suffered for 4 months with daily headaches. She was very respectful and listened carefully. She understood everything and was able to diagnose my issue. She prescribed 2 medicines and therapy. Less than 1 week from my appointment and my headaches are already reducing in frequency and pain level. She also told me about changes I needed to make to help my healing. Can't thank Dr Knepper enough and would absolutely recommend her!"
"This office is EXTREMELY hard to get a new patient appointment with... it can take 6 months or more to get in! I got lucky with another patient cancelling, and was able to get in quickly. The waiting room is quiet, and dimly lit- perfect for those suffering with headaches! The doctor took his time and really listened to me, and took the time to explain . I highly recommend, but be prepared to wait!"
