"Initially I thought moving here would be amazing since the units had been built within the last 2 years, however, that was not the case. We were the first and only African American family that lived in the community, and we were treated as such. The leasing office worker was kin to my neighbor, (I’ve seen her make personal visits and address her on a personal basis), who constantly made up false claims, conspiring with some of our other neighbors as well. My white neighbor left trash and a mattress in front of her home for 2.5 months in which the leasing office accused me of leaving it there, and continued to allow it to stay put until I complained via emails. It was in violation of the lease, and I was threatened to be charged if I didn’t have it removed although it wasn’t ours. Photos and txt to prove this. The homes in the community experiences issues with flies throughout the homes & the leasing office will not provide any remedy to this. Pest control is all on the expense of the renter, and they know the flies are a major issue. Then, we would place several maintenance requests, which all went un-answered for sometimes 2 weeks-, sometimes longer! The dishwasher never worked properly, the stove had a small crack that eventually got larger, due to non repair. The microwave malfunctioned, and I placed tickets for all of this- the tech eventually came by & said he wasn’t able to fix it and that he had to “order a part”. Well the part never came, and we had to continue using semi functional appliances. Our home was being watched, the police were called on us (which led to no action taken by police), we were literally treated like unwanted peasants, although we worked hard, went to school and just wanted to live in a safe, peaceful community. After enduring all of this, I asked to be released from my lease with a 60-day notice. The leasing office worker said I wouldn’t be charged if I just “left by the end of the month”. I told them no problem! (Email to confirm this). Now that we’ve finally moved and are happy where we reside now, they’re charging us for the broken dishwasher that was never fixed, the microwave that was never fixed, $350 for carpet that we already had cleaned, over $700 to replace 2 sets of mini-blinds. I’ve rented a few places, but this was the WORST experience I’ve ever had! I do not recommend! This is not an angry resident review- this is the truth on what I experienced, and I would hate for anyone to to go through what we experienced as a family."
"Moved into a place through Hulson Homes as my first apartment. The place was in shambles when we moved in with trash etc. left by the previous tenant... leaking garbage bags everywhere, cabinet doors pulled off the wall, broken heating system, and more. Rather than cleaning it up themselves they told myself and my housemates that if we did it all we could have a discount on first month's rent. We had bedbug issues as well as roaches coming from the unit next door that they did nothing about."
"Had the unfortunate experience of renting through these guys. They left us, knowingly, without cold water and a functioning smoke detector for 9 months, even after multiple maintenance requests. They also emailed out an attachment to every person in our building that contained the names and rent rates of every person in the building. Absolutely incompetent slumlords. Stay far, far away from them unless you want an apartment full of bedbugs and no heat."
"There are plenty of property managers in York and Adams, and I suggest you go anywhere but here. My first experience with them was when I dropped off my security deposit and first month's rent, the woman taking the money argued with me that it wasn't enough. The money orders were sitting right in front of her. I had to treat her like a Kindergartener and get out a calculator and point out every single money order, then she laughed and processed the money. The day before move-in I get to the property to let the gas company in. The place still had multiple things there from the previous tenants, mouse droppings all over the kitchen and in the cabinets, and broken light fixtures and door knobs. I call to question this, and they completely blew me off. I cleaned and tried to repair as much as I could, without spending money. The mice were a constant problem the entire time I was there, by the way, and they did not care. I let them know my intent to move out when the lease was over, and they were nice about it. A month after I move out, I get a bill at my new place. They were trying to keep my deposit and charge me for all kinds of things. As soon as I wrote a professional letter back to question all these charges, all the sudden they decided the charges weren't correct. I bet if I hadn't questioned anything, they wouldn't have noticed the "discrepancies"."
"We rented a townhouse in McSherrystown from Hulson Homes for just a few months. They were friendly and easy to deal with. Dave always returned my phone calls and texts in a reasonable fashion. They facilitated us moving short notice to accommodate being in a new place before my wife's due date. Any issues with the townhouse were dealt with promptly. They are easy to work with and fair with pricing. When another possibility came available that better fit our families needs they worked with us to facilitate that move. I would rate them 5-stars, but the apartments are old and could use some updating. Overall they are good apartments and nice people to deal with."
