About the Business
Saunders House is part of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory campus located at 140 Charles Street in Solomons, Maryland, United States. The campus consists of several buildings, including the Bernie Fowler Building, the Coastal Technologies Laboratory, the Cory Research Laboratory, the L. Eugene Cronin Complex, the R.V. Truitt Laboratory, Beaven Hall, the Becker House, and the Carey House.
The Bernie Fowler Building, dedicated to former Maryland State Senator C. Bernard “Bernie” Fowler, houses research laboratories for environmental chemistry and toxicology. The building also includes Interactive Video Network classrooms for teaching graduate courses.
The Coastal Technologies Laboratory is home to the Maritime Environmental Resource Center (MERC), which focuses on green ship and green port innovations. Researchers at MERC study environmental issues facing the maritime industry, including methods for removing alien organisms from ships' ballast water.
The Cory Research Laboratory, named after Dr. Ernest Cory, measures and monitors water quality, including levels of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The L. Eugene Cronin Complex, dedicated to CBL’s second director, Dr. L. Eugene Cronin, houses facilities for ecological, behavioral, and toxicological studies on fish and invertebrates.
The Research Fleet Operations Center is home to UMCES flagship research vessel Rachel Carson and several smaller vessels. The center provides scientists with access to the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers for research purposes.
The R.V. Truitt Laboratory is the newest building on the campus and includes state-of-the-art research labs and experimental facilities. The building is LEED gold certified and houses research groups, faculty members, and conference rooms.
Beaven Hall, the oldest state-funded building on the campus, is dedicated to pioneering fisheries scientist Dr. G. Francis Beaven. The building houses the CBL director, administration, library, faculty offices, and student offices.
The Becker House, originally a general store built in 1924, now serves as an outreach teaching laboratory and apartments for visiting scientists. The Carey House, built in 1903 as a U.S. Marine Hospital Service relief station, provides accommodations for mariners in the region.
Saunders House and the rest of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory campus offer a rich environment for research and study in environmental science and marine biology.
