Reviews of 21c Museum Hotel Durham
"Not impressed. Website pictures and real life do not match up. The overall look and feel was dirty and old. Like someone thought a coat of paint was all it takes to "remodel" an old building. No clear direction where to go when you enter. Multiple people went around the corner to the only person you can see...she's the hostess at the restaurant and she directed them to elevators and second floor. We wound up checking out a couple hours after checking in and stayed elsewhere. The hallways, lobby and especially the rooms (we had 2) smelled...odd. Furnishings were below average. The carpet felt grimy, I did not remove my shoes. There's no mini-fridge, the tiny table was so wobbly in one room I was afraid to touch it. If you are staying for the art/museum you'll want to ask around to see it I guess because it certainly wasn't clear where to go. They should make the parking or lack of it a notice on home page or booking page so guests can be prepared. We road around and around the hotel block waiting for the ONE valet/loading spot to be free so we could unload luggage, drive a block away to parking garage and walk back to hotel. I could go on but I don't want to sound overboard so I'll just stop here by saying I wish I had picked a different place. Naturally we did not receive a refund for our "stay" but I was just glad to get out of there."
"Me and my friends have been coming to the 21C for years to admire the beautiful art. We are all aspiring visual artists of the paint sector, so this place has become a safe haven for us to thrive and learn with all the beautiful collections of art the 21C Museum has to offer. Sadly, on our most recent visit we were told to leave for not having an adult present, which has never happened in the 2+ years my friends have been attending. I am deeply saddened by this encounter and i hope we are able to return to a place we once could learn and thrive so peacefully. Thank you for your time."
"I really enjoyed my stay. Location is excellent. Plenty of Entertainment and food within walking distance. And the service was good. Everyone was kind and welcoming. The only complaint I have is the condition of the linens. The bedding has been washed and dried a million times. Great cuz it's clean. Not so great because it's hard. Also, the furniture (sofa, chairs, etc) could use a cleaning. If you go make sure to request a microwave and refrigerator for your room if you need it. They do have them but it's only by request. Side note, definitely take a walk through the museum and checkout the bank volt. Pretty cool. I'll likely be back."
"I have been to the 21c Museum in 2020. I had such a great experience from the artwork to the hotel room. It was a great experience. At the beginning of the month, I talked 21c up SO much that we decided to drive from Charlotte to get away and have a great night. I normally do not complain and I can stand a lot of hotels. However, from the moment we checked in, the man at the front desk was completely unhelpful. He also said he couldn't scan my card, which made no sense, and worked the rest of the night Therefore my boyfriend had to put his card on file, which I didn't want him to have to do, but again no big deal. Also, because the person at the front desk was so unhelpful, I was so glad I had been to the hotel or I wouldn't have known ANYTHING. Where to go, what to do, anything about the museum, the bar, etc. We went to grab drinks after checking into the hotel. When we came back, I was upset because I thought my boyfriend forgot to close the door, but then......... when we were leaving the room to grab dinner.... the door literally WOULD NOT close. That's when I realized that it wasn't our error and EVERYTHING we had could have been stolen from our room??? The person I was with did speak to the front desk, they apologized, and gave us a new room along and told him they would make up for the last room. We went to the bar, got drinks, and I randomly asked about the midnight drink? I saw it on 21c Instagram account. The bartenders told us we should have received cards to give them for the drink. Of course, we didn't. I honestly wouldn't have said anything bad in this survey. However, what infuriated me THE MOST is that the hotel staff made it seem like we received free champagne, as an apology, as our room was literally just us receiving what I paid for? BUT THEN, THEY CHARGED HIS CARD. That's when I was completely over the whole, entire, experience. I was so upset because I spoke so highly of this hotel. It was a horrific experience."
"There were a few kinks in our stay. The $200 Thanksgiving meal was a big disappointment. The food was average and the waitstaff was much below average. We did not receive 3 items that were listed as part of the meal with no explanation - the green beans, the cranberries, and the desert. But we were brought the dressing that we asked our waitress not to bring. The only edible part of the meal was the salad and the prime rib, which was very average, with little taste, but the salad was great. Before getting the meal we ordered 2 classes of wine that never came. The bartender had to make up for the waitress forgetting our drink order, and not returning to the table. The room was nice and clean and the bed and pillows were wonderful. The view was outstanding. The only issue with the room was the fact that none of the receptacles worked except one, making it hard to charge both our phones. Both lamps were broken. The overhead light also did not work. I must say that the doormen, esp. Stan, were wonderful and extremely helpful."
