Reviews of Safeway
"It is known for having many out-of-date items still on the shelves, and lots of mold growing in the dairy section. The water filter wasn’t changed for over two years and drinking from it made me sick! The water stank like it was from a swamp."
"An embarrassment to the community. Old and cramped, High prices, poor selection, high turnover, understaffed. Pricing errors on almost every grocery trip. UPDATE: They've made improvements. There are now pricing errors only on every 2 trips. And the poorly-trained cashiers don't know how to fix them. And they don't usually man the Express checkout lane anymore. And the Safeway price difference vs other stores keeps getting wider. And you have to jump through hoops to get the sake prices that they display on the shelves. It's astonishing to me why anybody would choose Safeway for any reason other than location. I happily drive further to Harris Teeter or LIDL for a more pleasant shopping experience at lower prices."
"ANOTHER UPDATE: the remodel made the store look better, but the expiration problem is worse. No uncommon to find stuff on shelves that expired weeks or even a month earlier. The clearly don’t prioritize checking/rotating stock. UPDATE: They are going through a big renovation now, and the store is looking a lot less depressing. They still have not addresses the expiration date problem, though. Just the worst grocery store ever. It's Virginia's Soviet Safeway. The shelves are empty, the lines are long, and the employees look like political prisoners. If you shop here, ALWAYS check expiration dates. I routinely find stuff on the shelves that expired weeks or months earlier."
"I like the produce area here. There is plenty of space for all their fresh fruits and vegetables. It feels like they have everything. The sushi bar is slightly lacking, but they are often making fresh sushi when I visit. I also like that there is a Starbucks inside."
"I thought the other Safeway in McLean was a mess but this one is a disgrace to the Safeway name. They are undergoing a renovation but, quite frankly, should be closed as it is currently a health hazard with dirty water on the floor, filthy displays and mold and mildow between coolers. There are whole rows of freezers with freezer burned food and the employees don't seem to care. My suggestion to Safeway is to fire the managers of both McLean stores as well as the regional manager as none of them are doing their job. I'd only recommend going into this store as a last resort and only if you are going to buy canned goods - but check the expiration dates. I would not buy anything here that requires refrigeration because nobody knows how it is stored. I'm going to be calling the health department on Tuesday and will ask to meet them there for a walk through. Calling Safeway is clearly useless. See the photos and tell me if you have any confidence in that store. I'm not sure what those orange things are but they sure make the store look appetizing. All of the photos were taken in public areas. Safeway needs to take immediate action."
