Garrison Elementary School

"I went to Garrison Elementary when it first opened in 1969 in the sixth grade. It was only myself and another student in my class. First time I was ever in a new school. We lived on Vermont Avenue and I went to Grimke elementary from Kindergarten to the 5th grade. However, when the new school year rolled around I was required to go to Garrison since it was closer. Only a handful of students were there when school opened in September. We moved in October the same year, so I never finished my 6th grade at Garrison."

"Garrison Elementary School under the direction of Principal Collin Hill is a great elementary school. My child is being taught and retaining what she is learning. She is able to demonstrate in her nightly homework assignments all of the problem solving strategies her instructors (ELA Ms. Tyburski and Math Ms. Stroup) have taught her as well as in her classroom daily. My daughter had come to DCPS from PGCPS and it was a huge change. My biggest fear was that she wouldn't be able to get caught up to her classmates because she had missed so much school after she was involved in an accident of being hit by a car. To my astonishment, there was an organization that was working with teachers in DCPS that involved family engagement and more. After sitting with my daughters teachers one Saturday morning in the comfort of our home; I was able to explain what my child would need from them and they in turn told me what they desired from us in order to make it work for my child. Garrison Elementary school is the school that had what my daughter needed. I am glad I moved to the area to have her attend this school. A school that not only tells me but shows me they care about my child."
