Reviews of Fairhaven School
"Fairhaven came to me when I needed it. I couldn't adjust at the elementary school my brother and sister both attended. A single teacher there caused me endless problems. I found a school that didn't punish my curiosity after parting ways. Fairhaven has allowed me to represent myself like no other place would. Being able to question anything at Fairhaven made me happier, and I explored my interests by directing plays, using computers, and changing any part of the school my heart desired. Eventually, I knew what I wanted to do after Fairhaven. I wanted to attend college but was far behind my peers academically. I started an educational journey where I could study to my heart's content. Fairhaven didn't force me to attend ineffective classes or complete tedious homework. My flexible schedule allowed me to spend time with my family and study healthily yet productively. With the SAT score I wanted, I finally had an opportunity to get into the colleges I liked. The community at school was always supportive throughout. I explored civics to my heart's content, and I've been left with lots of good college essay material, haha. But I've become more thankful for the adventures I've had and the memories I've made while at Fairhaven. I appreciate being able to argue for any cause, pick my teachers, and advocate for myself. You get what you put into a place like Fairhaven. All opinions are valid, but Fairhaven has been a second chance I won't take for granted."
"I sent my two dauthers here from about 2003-2008, BEST decision I ever made. My oldest daughter graduated early and got into an out of state college at 16. Both girls are now married adults with great careers and multiple college degrees in science and medicine and education. The community at Fairhaven is so strong and life long frienships were built for them here. They both actually came back to the school to have their weddings. All of their friends went on to college and are all very strong, indepent adults in society. There is some magic to Fairhaven and the model it follows. There is actually a belief in each person's own innate genius and ability to make decisions for their best good. Something that is lacking in todays public school systems where there is no interest in or time set aside for personal introspection. The etymology of the word education it that it is derived from the Latin word educere which means, "to draw out". Fairhaven fully embraces the true meaning of this by allowing its students to do just that, draw upon their own innate wisdom the life lessons they need to have the lives they desire. I am more than happy to personally discuss my experiences with anyone and the entirty of those years can't be summed up in a thousand words or less."
"Students flocking to this innovative education model might be called "refugees from compensatory education." When the structure of the public school is just not working out, Fairhaven offers a very different way of doing education. The school environment is youth-led, adult-guided. Students learn what they want to learn, and they can go very deeply into subjects they love because they are in charge of their own learning. Everyone takes the running of the school as their responsibility, all students have a voice and a vote. All students rotate serving on a judicial council that governs the school. Fairhaven is K-12 and there is quite a lot of interaction across the ages. It's radical. It's delightful. When the traditional American public school model has been a misery to your student, Fairhaven feels like a reprieve. When it is the right fit, as it has been for my student, it is magical."
"I love this school! Both of my children have attended here and it's been wonderful for their development into responsible, happy, caring, thoughtful, well-spoken, indepedent and hard-working young men. I couldn't be more satisfied."
"We moved from Long Beach, CA, all the way to Maryland to attend this special school. We were afraid public schools were all moving in the direction of teaching to "the test" and heard horror stories of large classroom sizes, unhappy teachers (my mother, both aunts, and many friends are/were teachers), and bizarre incentives to cheat. We searched for private schools, and most of them were even more driven, competitive, and unabashedly pushing children to "succeed." We felt that all children were born curious, inventive, natural learners, and that many school models were ruining those innate abilities with constant drilling, testing, and grading children against each other. We opted out! Our five year old son attends Fairhaven, where he can run outside in the forest, play tag with kids from 5-19 year olds, learn about anything he wants whenever he wants without being labeled. If it takes him two years to learn how to read because he's busy with wood working projects, or simply because it takes him that long, he's free to explore his strengths and decide when to tackle ideas and concepts that may stretch him. He has a vote on everything that happens in the school through their democratic process - and has already voted once to suspend himself for play fighting that got too rough with another young student!! Can your kid take responsibility for himself like that?? We are thrilled with this model and have enjoyed getting to know the other students and their parents - each one fascinating and diverse. As one parent of a graduate told me (herself a teacher in the public schools) "I work in a 'box' school. A 'BIG box' school. That works for some people. Maybe most people. But not everyone. My daughter didn't fit in at the 'box' schools. She fit right in at Fairhaven!" My husband and I are both highly educated - two law degrees and one PhD between us. We've opted out of the traditional school models for our child because we believe all children are already intelligent - they don't need schools to make them smart. They need schools to give them the time, space, and support to get on with the business of being curious! Imagination is more important than knowledge. --- Albert Einstein"
