Reviews of Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists
"Our personal experience- Dr. Burgess was recommended to us by CVCA's department due to his skills on working particularly on small animals. Our five month old puppy French Bulldog puppy was diagnosed with a stage 6/6 heart murmur and PDA. When we first met Dr. Burgess, he was a bit stand-offish and cold/ lacked compassion. Something that may make a doctor good at what he does but no connection with pet owners. He told us the PDA ligation would consist of closing the valve. We did everything we can (GoFundMe, sacrifice our honeymoon fund, sell items, etc) to come up with the last bit for what ended up being a $7,000+ surgery. Come surgery day, we receive a call that the surgery itself went well. When we go to pick him up, we notice he is whimpering. We took it as a sign of pain and excitement from seeing us and the surgery. The next few days at home, we notice he is still whimpering and also vomiting. We have a scare and take him back only to find out he has aspiration pneumonia. They decide to keep him in an oxygen cage overnight for a few nights. After a few, we just didn't have the funds to keep him there since each night was anywhere around $800+ since every little thing was charged (ie oxygen use per hour, giving owner medications which were prescribed by them). We told him that we'd like to bring him home and have oxygen therapy treatments here in our care. We did some research and thank god for companies like PawPrint Oxygen in Pittsburgh, PA! We drove there to pick up the oxygen concenter and purchased a cage. Side note: to rent a machine is $400 for the first month and $200 each month after. The day we go to pick up Elvis, they couldn't let him out and released in our care because he was still oxygen dependent. The oxygen mask we also purchased wasn't good enough for the 20-30 minute drive home where his tent set up was. Dr. Burgess made the comment that euthanasia, surrender, or make more funds via crowd-funding for another stay overnight. His was pushed on us more than once, by the way. We made it very clear that it just wasn't possible because we had spent every little bit we had left at the moment. My husband and I then start to brainstorm and we got ahold of a medical grade portable oxygen tank and hooked it up for the cage we purchased. It worked and we got to bring out little guy home. He was in our care, comfortably, for the next few weeks. We noticed that as time went on, his voice was still gone and he was still vomiting. He wasn't able to hold down food and would vomit when he had to go to the bathroom. Dr. Burgess and Dr. Boszko both insisted it was the pneumonia then threw out it could be his vagus nerve but we had a hunch it was something due to the surgery causing this. We get approved for ScratchPay for another visit to CVCA where the cardiologist pretty much believes it's possible his vagus nerve was bothered during the PDA ligation, confirming our suspicions. She said she would discuss this with Dr. Burgess and give us a call back later that evening. We already knew how that conversation was going to go. Not like a doctor with a high reputation was going to take accountability and admit any fault. Cardiologist called and her answer suddenly changed to an esophagus issue. Adding: Dr. Burgess is the co-owner of the facility. The appointment with the cardiologist really didn't give us answers, so that was another $400+ wasted. Overnight, things took a downfall and got worse. Elvis was throwing up and couldn't even hold down liquids well. We made the decision to euthanize him in the morning. We lost our little man. Our hearts are absolutely broken. Our primary vet and staff were absolutely amazing and went above and beyond. We spent almost $10,000 in medical bills from CVCA + CVSS and ended up with nothing in the end. My husband wonders if things would've wound up different had we gone with another doctor, one that was a bit more sympathetic or had a better patient/doctor relationship. Again, this was just our personal experience and feelings. The staff itself on both sides were very kind."
"The price was high, but I felt it was reasonable! Also my boy cat is doing amazing after less than a week after surgery. My favorite thing was they constantly were calling to keep us updated as well!"

"We met Dr. Burgess and his devoted colleagues and staff under the worst circumstances. Over several weeks our active, happy Terrier mix Fox had isolated himself from the family, stopped eating and resisted his walks. A scan revealed tumors in the spleen and liver. The radiologist and our own veterinarian insisted that a specialist needed to be consulted before a final decision could be made. We were frantic and confused about the best course of action. After several futile attempts to get an appointment with veterinary surgeons and oncologists, and cold rejections of our dog's need, we were so lucky to call the Annapolis branch of Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists. From my initial call, I was treated with care and concern. The receptionist was sympathetic from the beginning of my explanation. Miraculously, Dr. Burgess had an appointment the following day. Surgeons usually deal with difficult situations, but Dr. Burgess went beyond all expectations in helping us and Fox with a diagnosis. After his examination, he clearly and compassionately explained possible options, but Dr. Burgess stunned us when he explained he had appealed to his oncologist colleague to do a definitive aspiration--- that day! This extra immediate care struck us unbelievably kind. His attentive vet tech Jess assured us she would make Fox warm and comfy with a heated blanket while we waited. Afterward Dr. Burgess delivered the diagnosis with empathy and candor. He did not hurry, but shared personal stories, looked up a crematorium at our request, and shared our grief in that very sad moment. Although sad, we were at peace, and knew with certainty what we should do. Fox crossed the Rainbow Bridge the next morning, in our living room, on his bed as we talked to him and gave him rubs. Of course there will be another dog in our future. We live in Towson and Annapolis is a drive, but should our next Doggo need a surgeon, I would drive to Annapolis without hesitation to have him treated by Dr. Burgess at CVSS."
"My husband and I do not have the words to expressed our gratitude for the outstanding care our boy, Lou, received at CVSS during his extended stay after chest wall resection surgery. Dr. Jeyakumar, Dr. Arnold and the entire Surgical - ICU team went above and beyond our expectation to make sure our boy got home. From the beginning Lou’s condition was questionable. His tumor was located in a place where even the CT guided biopsy was not feasible. Options for his treatment were presented to us by Dr.J, and she answered all of our questions and concerns with professionalism and honesty to help us arrive at our decision to move forward with surgery. Throughout Lou’s seven day stay, my family was treated with respect and an abundance of kindness. We were given updates each morning, encouraged to call throughout the day, and daily visits were arranged so that we could spend time with Louie. Never once were we made to feel we were an inconvenience. The ICU staff sat with Lou 24/7, played music for him and treated him with so much love just to keep him relaxed. Dr. J and Dr. Arnold came in during the late evening/early morning hours to check on him. I’m sure it was taxing at times. Because of the skill, dedication and selflessness of these beautiful people we have been gifted a bit more time with our precious boy, and for that we will be forever indebted. Thank you, Dr. Jeyakumar, Dr. Arnold and the entire CVSS TEAM!"
