"For a long time I supported this place and strongly advocated against shopping at Ace hardware. Keep things local at a hardware store that is part of the community. Unfortunately, one smug employee ruined that experience for me, and I'll now be switching my allegiance to Ace. I purchased a small $6 shower accessory. Unfortunately I lost the receipt. The accessory was not what I needed, and I attempted to return it. The employee stated I cannot return without a receipt, even for a store credit (I was going to purchase products worth more than the value of what I was returning). I was disappointed at this response, but I shopped for what I needed anyway. I went to the front, and the employee was helping another customer in an aisle. After helping that customer, she proceeded to another customer in the aisle. Now, I understand one person having to triage, but at that point a simple acknowledgement of me would have been nice. It felt intentional, and it seemed as if the employee was taking satisfaction, acting somewhat smug as she told me she won't accept a return without a receipt. Not sure if this is just one rude employee, or the owner is really this strict about returns on $6 items that are clearly unused, but either way, I seriously doubt I'll be doing business here any more. If you had or have a similar experience, I also encourage you to drop these clowns. In short, I go to a neighborhood spot like this for the service. And when I'm treated this way, it defeats the purpose of avoiding much more convenient and likely cheaper options like Ace or Amazon. You are not really selling hardware - you should be trying to offer a superior customer experience--remember that and you will not lose customers like this"
"It's like stepping back in time when coming here to buy. I'd come here before any chain store any day. Excellent service, excellent selection. Their deli is awesome, too!"
"This isn't my first time at Nichols. I've always been taken care of by the staff but this time was different. At about 3:15PM on Thursday June 15, 2023 I asked the lady behind the counter for help with a special socket and was met with the response: "all of our sockets are here on this wall." I explained that I needed a special type of socket, (I don't know tools), that would fit this device, I had the device in my hand. Her response was "ok, I'll come over and do the work for for you." She then proceeded to tell me "yeah I don't know even understand what you're telling me" so she left, with my device in her hand, and asked, who I presume was the manager, "yeah...he's looking for something to stick down in here...I don't even know what he's talking about." All the while I'm standing 10 feet away from her! This is NOT my first encounter with her and after reading some of the negative comments here I'm surprised that she's still employed by Nichols. Thanks for making me feel worse."
"Awesome family owned hardware store in downtown Pville. Had what I needed in a pinch, helpful sales staff, and fair prices. Highly recommend! Let's keep our small family-owned businesses strong and thriving!"
"What a great local hardware store. I work at a local golf course and this place has had everything I've needed so far. I needed some nine inch heavy duty bolts and had no problem finding them. Home Depot and Lowe's were both out of stock. If you're close to purcellville I would check this place first it's small but they've had everything I've needed so far. The owners and staff are amazing and nice."
